Xu Xuejun, director of the Department of Neurosurgery of the Second People's Hospital of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, said that according to his years of clinical experience, serious head injuries of the injured in traffic accidents are often life-threatening, and even if the rescue is successful, the later recovery is quite challenging for doctors and the injured, "If 40% of the injured may lose their lives, then among the 60% of the survivors, only 10%~20% may recover better." Patients are often left with a certain disability or even fall into a vegetative state".
According to statistics, in electric bicycle road traffic accidents, the number of deaths due to head injury accounts for more than 80% of the total deaths, and the correct wearing of safety helmets can effectively protect the head and reduce the risk of traffic accident death by 60%~70%.
The helmet quality is not up to par

The Road Traffic Safety Law clearly stipulates that motorcycle drivers and passengers shall wear safety helmets in accordance with regulations. At present, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guizhou, Shanghai and other provinces and cities have successively issued local regulations on the management of electric bicycles, which clearly require people who drive or ride electric bicycles to wear safety helmets.
However, in some traffic accidents, the driver is obviously wearing a helmet, but the quality of the helmet is not up to par and causes injuries. The staff of the State Administration for Market Regulation said that some electric bicycle helmet products on the market mainly have the following quality problems.
- The helmet has poor performance in absorbing collision energy;
- The strength of the wearing device is insufficient, which is easy to cause the helmet to detach;
- The helmet has poor penetration resistance and is easy to be pierced by sharp objects;
- The helmet has insufficient stiffness, poor overall pressure resistance, etc.
Previously, a woman in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, was hit by a car coming from the side when she was driving an electric bicycle across the road, and the accident caused the woman's head trauma and cervical vertebra fracture. Public video footage shows that although the woman was wearing a helmet, the helmet was thrown away at the moment of impact, failing to play the role of protection it should have.
Photos from the scene of the accident show that the helmet had no cushioning layer, and after the impact, a large hole was broken in the helmet shell and the wearing device was thrown off.

In order to effectively ensure the safety of people's travel, the State Administration for Market Regulation, together with the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, organized and completed the formulation of the new version of the mandatory national standard for motorcycle and electric bicycle occupant helmets, which was officially implemented from July 1 this year. The "new national standard" puts forward specific requirements for the shape and internal performance of electric bicycle helmets.

The standard divides helmets into class A and class B according to the two different applicable objects of motorcycles and electric bicycles. It is stipulated that Class A helmets are motorcycle occupant helmets and are suitable for motorcycle occupants, and Class B helmets are helmets for e-bike occupants, which are only applicable to e-bike occupants.
Helmets that meet the national standards for electric bicycle occupant helmets must have obvious sky blue shading and black letter B logos and reflective logos on the appearance.
According to the shape, helmets are divided into full helmets, 3/4 half helmets and 1/2 half helmets. The full helmet can cover the entire chin part, if the riding speed is fast, you should wear a full helmet with complete protection, 3/4 half helmet lacks the chin area, but has some protection for the ear area, and 1/2 half helmet is mainly for the protection of the head and back of the head.
- Helmets are available in five sizes: extra-small, small, medium, large, and extra-large
The "new national standard" fully considers the adult and children's head size of Chinese, and on the basis of the original large, medium and small specifications, two helmet specifications of extra small and extra large are added, and the relevant size ratio is adjusted, of which the extra small specification is suitable for children aged 4~10 years old.

The "new national standard" also has detailed requirements on multiple performance indicators related to helmet and safety, such as the stability of the fixture, the strength of the wearing device, the overall absorption of collision energy, and the penetration resistance of the shell. Among them, friction and shear force are newly added to simulate the ground sliding scene in the event of a traffic accident.
To put it simply, the outer surface of the helmet is relatively smooth and there are no hard protrusions, so the safety is relatively higher. The engineer explains: "If the friction between the helmet and the road surface is very high, the force on the neck will also be very high, resulting in a pulling injury. In the same way, shear force refers to the fact that the shell of the helmet has protrusions and pulls against the pits on the surface of the road, which will also form pulling injuries. ”
- The "new national standard" has special requirements for helmet goggles
Engineers threw a particle of sand from a certain height and observed the haze level of the helmet goggles. If it exceeds the standard value, it means that the helmet may not take long to wear goggles during actual use, which not only makes it feel bad, but also affects driving safety.

- Safety helmets also have a service life, generally not more than two ~ three years
