In the "Selection Measures", the Swimming Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China elaborated on the selection basis, basic conditions, athletes' qualifications, registration principles, coach selection, and list determination. According to the Selection Rules, athletes are selected based on the results of three events: the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, the individual finals of the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, and the results of the 2024 National Swimming Championships. This is first of all a threshold for Sun Yang, who has been in the ban period and has no record of participating in the competition.
According to past experience and practice, the annual National Swimming Championships are the trials of the World Championships that year, such as the 2023 Championships and Asian Games Trials, which only start in early May. Next year's national championship is scheduled to be held in Shenzhen from April 19 to 27, which ends three days before Sun Yang's lifting of the ban (April 30).
