The new moon is only a woman

Love, treat me only as a stone,

Don't dedicate it to me again:

The tenderness of the lilies,

The heat of the incense,

A long river of tears.

Behold, there is a little calf on the hill

In the face of the white world;

Don't call it stupid,

It is only silent

Keeping its silence.

In the history of modern Chinese literature, there is such a "talented woman", she and Lin Huiyin belong to the only two female poets of the "Crescent School"; although she has not written many books and left behind quite limited works, her writing has distinctive characteristics and independent character. She is the talented girl of the New Moon - Fang Lingru. Her poem "A Poem" was written at National Qingdao University and published in the inaugural issue of Poetry Magazine in January 1931. Chen Mengjia praised her "A Poem": "It is a quiet stream in the river of life, she has such a serious look, this sketch of simple impression, is a masterpiece that has not been seen." ”

The new moon is only a woman

Fang Lingru (1897~1976), a native of Tongcheng, Anhui Province, was a prose writer, poetess, and a descendant of Fang Bao. Fang Lingru's family was full of talents, his grandfather Fang Zongcheng was a staff member of Zeng Guofan, and was a well-known scholar of the "Tongcheng School"; Fang Lingru's father, Fang Shoudun, had read poetry and books since he was a child, and devoted himself to the reform instead of the imperial examination, and was a calligrapher in the late Qing Dynasty.

In 1923, under the influence of the "May Fourth Movement", Fang Lingru went to the United States with her husband Chen Pingfu to study, studied Xi at Washington State University, and later transferred to the University of Wisconsin to study literature. He returned to China in 1929 and successively served as a lecturer at the National Qingdao University and a professor at the Chongqing National Drama School. From 1939 to 1942, he served as the editor of the National Compilation Museum in Beibei, Chongqing. After 1943, he became a professor in the Department of Chinese at Fudan University in Shanghai. After 1949, she was elected vice president of the Shanghai Women's Federation. From 1958 to the "Cultural Revolution", he served as the chairman of the Zhejiang Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles. He died on September 30, 1976 at the age of 80.

Fang Lingru began to write new poems in the early 30s of the 20th century, and most of his poems were published in the magazine "New Moon". In August 1930, Yang Zhensheng's friend Deng Zhongchun (Deng Chu) came to Qingdao University to become a school doctor, and Deng Zhongchun and Fang Lingyu had a marriage, so they recommended her to be a lecturer in the Chinese Department of National Qingdao University. Fang Lingru arrived at National Qingdao University in July 1931, and according to the "National Qingdao University Weekly", except for a few professors, lecturers, and teaching assistants who were re-hired and newly hired by the university in this academic year, their application letters had not been sent. Except for the urging from the school, they have all arrived at the school one after another. I have found a copy of the list, which is published on the left: Professor and Provost Zhao Wei. Professor and Head of the Department of Chinese Literature and Dean of the Faculty of Arts...... Lecturers of the Department of Chinese Literature, You Guoen, Huang Quibo, Fang Lingru, Shen Congwen, Wang Shijin......

In Qingdao, as one of the few female university teachers in China, Fang Lingyu began a truly free life, serving as a lecturer in the Department of Chinese and managing female students, teaching "Zhaoming Anthology" and "University Mandarin".

When she came to Qingdao, Fang Lingru was 33 years old, with a daughter, and lived in the women's dormitory of Qingdao University in Building 7. Fang Lingru also lived in the same building as two librarians, Zhang Zhaohe and Li Yunhe. Zhang Zhaohe came to Qingdao after accepting Shen Congwen's long pursuit and began to rely on each other for decades. Li Yunhe came to work at the school under the introduction of Provost Zhao Taiyun, and audited in the Chinese department, and later changed her name to Lan Ping, and then to Jiang Qing.

In 1931, Fang Lingru's nephew Fang Weide and Chen Mengjia came to Qingdao, both of them were students of Wen Yiduo, Chen Mengjia was good at writing new poems, and Wen Yiduo appreciated it. Fang Lingru ranked ninth in the family, and Fang Weide called her "Ninth Aunt", so everyone followed Fang Weide and called her "Ninth Aunt". Regarding this matter, Liang Shiqiu later humorously explained: "This is an official title, regardless of the number of generations." Because of Fang Weide's relationship, Wen Yiduo and Fang Lingru also became friends.

Fang Lingru is a beautiful girl, gentle and elegant, and is also known for her beauty, Wang Zhaojian (Liang Shiqiu, a student of National Youth University) once said: "She looks like a poplar (actress Yang Junli) and is elegant." The esthetician Chang Renxia also said that the beauties he has seen in his life are the first in the nine aunts. In Qingdao, the best relationship with Fang Lingru is to smell a lot. At that time, Fang Lingru was good at writing poems, and often asked Wen Yiduo for advice, and Wen Yiduo had a good impression of her. Their correspondence has caused some gossip.

Liang Shiqiu once mentioned in "Talking about Yiduo", "In fact, Yiduo blew a little ripple emotionally at this time, and the situation was not too serious, because he strangled it to death when the emotion just gave birth to a bud." The emotional ripples mentioned by Liang Shiqiu are the delicate relationship between Wen Yiduo and Fang Lingyu, which was confirmed by Wen Yiduo's descendants when compiling the "Wen Yiduo Years of Genealogy": "The so-called emotional ripples are probably the relationship between Mr. Wen Yiduo and Fang Lingyu, a lecturer in the Department of Chinese. In the spring of 1932, Wen Yiduo brought his wife and children to Qingdao, and the rumors were self-defeating.

Fang Lingru married Jiangning Chen in his early years and had a daughter. The husband was born in a family, was suave, served in the financial industry, and had wealth, but the two had different interests and finally separated. Probably because of this, Fang Lingru came to Qingdao for the first time, and the people and land were unfamiliar, and the frustration of marriage could not be relieved. Liang Shiqiu wrote Fang Lingru: "She is quite lonely, and she doesn't like to associate with people except for a few friends who can talk to her. She often wears a black cheongsam without grease powder. When she lives alone, or walks alone outside, she always carries a faint sorrow...... Reluctant to talk about family affairs, when talking about Tongcheng Fang's family, her face turned crimson, and people couldn't talk about it anymore. ”

Fang Lingru's state of mind can be seen from the poem "Lingqi" written at this time, she wrote:

One night I rode the faint starlight,

I walked alone on the familiar mountain trail.

The spring water is still delicate and embraces the mountain,

White dew stained my sandals.

A few phosphorus fires illuminate the hazelnut thorns,

A pair of crested pythons lead in front,

Guide me to climb a thousand layers of white stones,

In order to find the stone wall with the inscription on it.

Thou, the word engraved on the stone suddenly became formed

The clever white dove, gently flying down and soaring;

With my little wings tied to my hope,

The solidity of faith and the eternity of life.

The new moon is only a woman

In order to help Fang Lingru get rid of her loneliness, her friends dragged her to drink. According to Liang Shiqiu's recollection in the article "Fang Lingru and His People", there was no entertainment at that time, "how can we solve our worries? Later, at the suggestion of Yang Zhensheng, every weekend, "our group would gather for drinks at least once in Shun Hing Building or Hou Defu". Among them, Yang Zhensheng, Zhao Taiyun, Wen Yiduo, Chen Jichao, Liu Kangfu, Huang Jiyu and Liang Shiqiu belong to the "good drinkers". However, because there are only seven people, one more will become the "Eight Immortals", and later, after hearing a lot of proposals, everyone invited the lonely Fang Lingru into this "small circle", and finally made up the "Eight Immortals in Wine". So guess the boxing order, staggered, and enjoy it for two years. In fact, Fang Lingru is not good at drinking, slightly drunk, red-faced, red-eared, and knows that she can't drink, and we don't force her. ”

Fang Lingru is at Shandong University, and in addition to teaching, he is also engaged in creation, writing poetry and prose. She wrote a collection of essays called Home. During this period, Fang Lingru talked with Wen Yiduo and Chen Mengjia that in addition to "New Moon", a journal that could publish poetry should be established. Chen Mengjia went to Shanghai for this reason and talked to Xu Zhimo about Jiugu's opinion, Xu Zhimo was very happy, and immediately prepared for it, and asked for manuscripts everywhere, and the new publication was called "Poetry Magazine", which became the representative publication of the Crescent School. In January 1931, the "Poetry Magazine" was launched. The name was given based on Fang Lingru's suggestion. Wen Yiduo also published his work "Miracle" on it, and Fang Lingru published "A Poem", "Lingqi", "Fantasy", "Let You", "Her Likeness", "Pillow River Pavilion" and other poems in "Poetry Magazine".

After the "918" incident, the student petition wave spread to Qingdao University, Yang Zhensheng, Wen Yiduo and others left one after another, and Fang Lingru also left Qingdao soon after. Deng Mingyi wrote about the reasons for Fang Lingru's departure from Shandong University in "The Biography of Fang Lingru", he wrote: "Fang Lingru, like many intellectuals with a sense of national justice and patriotism, was sad and angry, and coupled with the rush for a living, he soon became depressed and suffered from hyperthyroidism. Due to the ferocity of her illness, she had to leave Qingdao. ”
