The Bamboo Sports Hall combines a modernist organic design model with only one natural material, bamboo, in the construction of the main body. The building's exterior is inspired by the Thai lotus flower and alludes to the Buddhist teachings promoted by the school. With a capacity of 300 students, the Bamboo Sports Hall maintains a low-carbon footprint while providing modern sports facilities, while the bamboo architecture is integrated with the surrounding architectural landscape and the natural hilly landscape, symbolizing the mission of a "green school". Covering an area of 782 square metres, the gymnasium is equipped with a futsal court, basketball court, volleyball court, badminton court and a stage that can be raised and lowered automatically. Behind the stage is an equipment storage room, while the balconies on both sides provide space for visitors.
The lotus flower is a symbol of Thailand and Buddhism, and CLA designed the stadium in the shape of a lotus flower. The design team, led by Markus Roselieb and Tosapon Sittivong, designed the venue to accommodate up to 300 people and blend in with the surrounding nature. The school required them to design as a modern sports facility and to use only bamboo as building materials to maintain the school's low-carbon footprint.
Spanning a total area of 782 square meters (8,417 square feet), the venue can be used for basketball and futsal, as well as badminton and volleyball. Behind the self-lifting stage is storage space, and a raised platform allows parents and visitors to watch the various events held at the venue. Natural ventilation and thermal insulation ensure year-round coolness in the venue, and the exposed bamboo also has aesthetic value.
The bamboo-based structure not only provides ventilation but also retains temperature, resulting in a cool and pleasant climate all year round. Looking at the bare bamboo structure is like going to a craft feast, which makes people have to feel the charm of exquisite design. In addition, the design of the hall was carried out by two independent engineers, who selected prefabricated bamboo trusses with a span of more than 17 meters as the main supports, which were prefabricated on-site and installed with the help of cranes. It is reported that the service life of these bamboo materials is at least 50 years, and at the same time, it can also withstand local high-speed winds and earthquakes.
With the help of two independent engineers, the stadium is resilient to strong winds, earthquakes, and other natural disasters that are common in the area. The newly developed bamboo trusses, which can be extended by 17 meters, were assembled on site and then lifted and fixed by a crane. Given the zero-carbon emission requirement, bamboo absorbs much more carbon than it emits during transportation, building and other construction.
