Soon after the earthquake, Jintian Village and Caotan Village in Zhongchuan Township, Minhe County, caused a sand surge, and a large number of houses were surrounded and washed away by silt, and 20 people lost contact. After the incident, the Qinghai Provincial Fire and Rescue Corps organized a rescue overnight.
The reporter rushed to Jintian Village in Minhe County, Qinghai Province, which is one of the hardest-hit places in the Qinghai earthquake area. Strong earthquakes have triggered various secondary disasters. At the entrance to Kaneda Village, there used to be a road passing through it, flanked by several houses and a vacant lot, but now it is covered in silt. The fire rescue personnel of the Qinghai Provincial Fire and Rescue Corps are carrying out intense excavation work.
CCTV reporter Bian Xiaoyan: Now the entire large area of land is actually covered with thick layers of this silt. I dug up a piece of it and showed it to everyone, and it was very wet, and it was very thick and sticky, and the rescuers told me that it was so heavy and dense that it could not be dug by hand alone, and had to rely on heavy machinery.
The three excavators that were urgently dispatched have been running in tandem. Soon after the earthquake, thick mud, with waves as high as three meters, rolled into the village.

Qi Fenyong, a cadre from Zhongchuan Township, Minhe County, Qinghai Province: After the earthquake, I arrived at this village in about 10 minutes, and the mud had already turned over to this place. It felt incredible, and we couldn't imagine where we got so much dirt.
CCTV reporter Bian Xiaoyan: My height is 1.66 meters, and I can't see it at the top of the silt when I stand here, because the silt is at least two and a half meters thick, and the thickest part may be more than three meters.
This geological hazard is called "sand swelling" and appears after a major earthquake. Due to the shaking of the earth's crust, the water-bearing sand deep underground is liquefied, and the liquefied sand layer reaches the surface directly along a certain channel. This is related to the water content of the underground aquifer and to the degree of extrusion deformation. So why does the "sand surge phenomenon" appear here? It is not unrelated to a nearby river ditch.
Qi Fenyong, a cadre from Zhongchuan Township, Minhe County, Qinghai Province: In the past, there was a dry ditch next to this place that had a little water during the summer rainy season, and there was usually no water in the ditch. After this earthquake, due to the high groundwater level, all the mud under the bottom was turned up, and there was a secondary step on the north side, and the soil was relatively loose and washed down.
This ditch is wide upstream and narrow downstream. At the fork in the highway not far from Jintian Village, the width suddenly changed from more than 20 meters wide to 3 or 4 meters. The road ahead narrowed, and the mud could not continue to pass, and then it accumulated more and more and overflowed the ditch. At present, the road connecting the two villages is still buried under silt.
CCTV reporter Bian Xiaoyan: The place where I am standing now was in the middle of the road before the earthquake, but I couldn't see it at all. The ditch was walked all the way in this direction, and when the river reached the point of the road, it suddenly narrowed, from the original width of 20 meters to about 4 meters wide.
In order to rescue the missing people as soon as possible, the fire and rescue personnel continued to work after nightfall. The resettlement of the villagers is also proceeding in an orderly manner. The families of the missing people, accompanied by their families and government workers, live in tents closest to the rescue site and continue to wait for news of their loved ones.

A vacant lot at the entrance of the village is another resettlement site in Jintian Village. More than 100 villagers have already moved into tents. The outside temperature dropped to minus 10 degrees Celsius, and the stove was burning warm in the tent where they lived.
Ma Zhongmei, a villager from Jintian Village: It's warm, the tent was set up at five o'clock in the afternoon, the stove was set up, and we didn't get cold. The bed was given at eight o'clock, and I was not afraid of the cold.
Villager of Jintian Village: I have enough to eat, and there are two buckets to eat at night.
Even though it was late at night, there were still people running back and forth, setting up tents, distributing supplies, and busy. It was another sleepless night for many of the staff.
