UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement today through his spokesperson strongly condemning North Korea's test launch of a long-range ballistic missile on the same day.

According to the media, citing information from the South Korean Joint Staff Headquarters, the DPRK military launched a suspected long-range ballistic missile into the eastern sea area around Pyongyang at about 8:24 a.m. that day. This is North Korea's fifth ICBM launch this year, more than five months after its July 12 test launch of the Hwasong-18 ICBM, which uses solid fuel.

Guterres strongly condemned this and reiterated his call on the DPRK to fully comply with its international obligations under all relevant Security Council resolutions.

The Security Council has previously adopted resolutions explicitly demanding that North Korea refrain from conducting nuclear tests, refrain from launching ballistic missile technology, and suspend all activities related to its ballistic missile program.

Guterres also called on North Korea to reopen channels of communication and resume dialogue without preconditions in order to achieve sustainable peace and complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
