 Dialogue with Adu 

At the end of November, Adu and I met at a climbing gym near Beijing's CBD to participate in a rock climbing experience organized by the non-profit organization "Handshake China". The friends who participated in the climbing experience were all people with disabilities, and most of them were cheerful and liked to socialize and exercise. The organizer of the event, Lao Tan, is the founder of Handcrank China, an American who has lived in Beijing for 22 years, and in addition to rock climbing, he also organizes disabled friends to swim, ride, dive and skydive together from time to time.

Adu: Why is that sense of conviction so strong?

Dong Qi (person with disabilities): I think it is a yearning for a better life, which supports us to come out and move forward bravely.

Deng Hongyan (person with a disability): I think everyone has a curiosity about life, like I haven't climbed a rock before, so I came to try. When you try it, you will feel that the world is really different, it turns out that I can still live like this, I can live like this.

Adu: Your spirit, your perseverance, I want to learn Xi. I have also said before that I have suffered from depression and anxiety, whether it is the love or care of the people around me, the most important thing is to rely on myself.

 Dialogue with Adu 

Adu was once one of the most high-profile singers in the Chinese music scene, and in 2002 he released his first album "Dark", which set a record of 1.5 million copies sold in Asia that year, and became an overnight success. But less than two years after becoming popular, during the concert in 2004, Adu was unable to sing on stage due to excessive anxiety and panic, and almost lost control. There are even media reports that "Adu is crazy".

Adu: I released 3 albums in two years, and I was under a lot of mental pressure, but I was depressed at the end of 2003.

Tagawa: How serious was my condition at that time?

Adu: It's so bad that I can't work, I can't communicate, my whole body is weak, my eyes can't focus, I can't record at all, I can't sing a song. That's when I knew I was wrong.

Tagawa: It became popular very quickly, and problems came quickly.

Adu: Yes, I may not be able to adapt to this environment all of a sudden. For example, if the company wants me to go where to do activities, I say that I can not make so many announcements, because I will be afraid to speak in front of the camera. When the machine filmed me, I couldn't even introduce myself, so I was very nervous. Maybe it's because I'm more introverted and I'm not particularly confident on stage.

Tagawa: So at that time, the pressure you faced was probably more and more complicated, and the fans didn't know what was going on behind the scenes, and there were different voices that kept attacking you?

Adu: Absolutely. At that time, I was really uncomfortable, and the company didn't understand, saying that I didn't want to do anything. Actually, it's not that I don't want to do it, it's that I can't do it, and I can't control myself when the disease comes. But I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to work, so even though my illness was very serious at the time, I kept running the propaganda.

Tagawa: The more you carry it, the more serious it gets.

Adu: Yes, actually, if I had stopped and gone to the doctor earlier to adjust, I might have recovered in a year or two. But I didn't stop, so it got worse and worse.

Adu was born in an ordinary family in Singapore in 1973, his parents divorced at the age of 6, Adu and his four siblings lived with his mother, and began to drop out of school at the age of 15 to work.

Adu: At that time, the family conditions were not very good, and my parents divorced when I was 6 years old, so I came out to work early. My mom doesn't like that I'm always at home.

Tagawa: How many kinds of jobs have you ever had, and which one was the hardest?

Adu: Quite a lot, assembling accessories and waiters have done it. The hardest thing should be repairing the car, because I have to stay under the car all the time, and every time I get under the car to repair the car, I will faint, want to vomit, and often be scolded.

Tagawa: There is a lyric in "He Must Love You Very Much" that says "I should be under the car", is it related to this experience?

Adu: No, it doesn't matter.

Tagawa: Did you know that there is a meme on the Internet about this lyric? They say that before driving in winter, you should pay attention to the cats, dogs, and Adu under the car.

Adu: I've heard it, I think it's good, people will remember to wake me up in the winter.

 Dialogue with Adu 

Adu officially entered the entertainment industry at the age of 29, and before that, he worked as a foreman in the construction industry for 7 years, feeding stray dogs at the construction site, eating and drinking with his co-workers, and singing in the open wind, which was the most carefree day of his life.

Adu: In Singapore, I had to do my military service at the age of 18, and I entered the construction industry after completing my military service, so it was a relatively stable job for me at that time.

Tagawa: You said earlier that you had the happiest time at the construction site, and you would sing songs with your co-workers.

Adu: Yes, I'm happier working on a construction site, it's one of my favorite jobs in so much. There are a lot of stray dogs on the construction site, and in the evening, the stall selling Hainanese chicken rice will leave the leftover bones for me to pick up. After work, I would go to get the bones and feed the stray dogs. Then I turned on the radio in the car and sang and fed.

Many people asked me how to practice my hoarse voice, and I thought it should be sung on the construction site. It's a big, empty place, and I might just sing harder.

Tagawa: Do you still have any contact with your former co-workers?

Adu: Several of them are still in touch.

Tagawa: Are they particularly proud of you?

Adu: Yes, at the beginning they encouraged me and cheered me on, and they were very happy after I succeeded.

In 1999, Adu, who was still working on the construction site at the age of 26, participated in the music training class of Singapore Sea Butterfly Production Company with his friends, and finally selected two people out of 3,000 people, one was Adu and the other was Lin Junjie.

Adu: I was quite old when I attended the training course, 26 years old. In the end, he signed me and Lin Junjie, who was only a teenager at the time.

Tagawa: Are you under pressure? Because you also said that there may be more children in the entertainment industry.

Adu: Of course, there is, the construction industry is still quite far from the singers, and I am the biggest in the training class, and I have a separation from other people. At that time, I was also doing a good job in the construction industry, quite free, and I was given a car. That's why I didn't pay much attention to the training class, maybe once a week, and sometimes I didn't go. Then my agent called me and said you have to come to class, and I said I had to work late, and he said you had a chance, and I thought, is this hinting at me? I've been more active since that day.

Tagawa: You still need a clear result before you are willing to put in the effort.

Adu: Yes, every time I wear my construction shoes and smell of sweat.

Tagawa: Do you feel like you're out of place, even if you can change your shoes.

Adu: There was pressure, and it wasn't easy, so I waited two years for the album "It's Dark" to be released.

As a child, domestic violence often planted the seeds of depression

In 2002, relying on the popularity of the album "It's Dark" and earning a lot of income, Adu bought a house for his family as soon as possible.

Tagawa: How did you live when you were a child?

Adu: We lived very young, until we were 6 years old, our family lived in a house made of wood and iron sheets, and it would leak when it rained. After the age of 6, he moved into a government flat, like public housing.

Tagawa: You said that the seeds of depression planted in your heart may be related to the experience of domestic violence when you were fostered at your uncle's house when you were a child?

Adu: yes, I think it does. I used to be beaten a lot, for example, when my uncle was sleeping, he would beat me with a rattan, after all, I lived in someone's house. Singapore is different now, if parents hit their children, the police and the principal will come to them, but at that time, they said that they would be beaten. Maybe it's because of this that I am more introverted, have low self-esteem, and have no sense of security.

Since 2004, Adu has been battling depression, with frequent relapses and frequent emergency room visits. For a long time, we rarely heard from Adu.

Adu once published a long post on his social platform, revealing his experience of depression to the public. As an artist, he is not Xi used to telling his story over and over again at press conferences, not Xi used to wearing a straight suit and smirking with a red wine glass, tossing and turning several flights a day, being secretly photographed, and singing in front of the public, all of which made him feel panicked and scared. On the other side of the fight against depression, the music scene has long been renewed, although every once in a while Adu will release new songs and participate in the show, but few people pay attention to it anymore.

Tagawa: So at that time, I had to deal with not only the pressure of the disease, but also the pressure of the outside world.

Adu: yes, so it's very difficult, it's been a vicious cycle. At that time, many people didn't understand me, and the company also said that I didn't accept anything, which was more difficult.

Tagawa: Will anyone say that you play a big name?

Adu: It does cause misunderstanding, and it will be sad to hear these words at that time.

Tagawa: Did you try to explain?

Adu: No. In this industry, if you want to stay hot, a lot of people will choose to post news or something, but I rarely post news, and I don't operate. Being an artist like me will suffer more.

Tagawa: Since it's a disadvantage to be in this industry in terms of personality, why did you choose to make a comeback?

Adu: Actually, there is no such thing as a "comeback", and I have never quit. I just slowed down my pace and posted a piece for a long time.

Tagawa: So you're actually a person with your own pace.

Adu: It's just that the pace is a bit slow.

Adu said that after suffering from depression, he no longer understood what happiness was. Fortunately, with the support and companionship of family, friends, and fans, Adu has gradually come out of the trough of his life. In 2016, Adu married his girlfriend who had been in love for many years, and the birth of his son also gave Adu new responsibilities and strength to his life.

Adu: I'm putting my focus on my child right now, and he gives me hope.

Tagawa: Will you take him with you to exercise?

Adu: Yes, but he likes to be with his mother, not with me.

Tagawa: Then you will be lost?

Adu: Very.
