Chen Yuefang was born in Yinchuan, Ningxia in 1963, her father was a clerk in the supply and marketing system of Yinchuan City, and her mother was illiterate and a housewife.
Chen Yuefang has a total of 5 brothers and sisters, and she is the youngest child in the family.
When she was a child, Chen Yuefang's family lived in a large compound in Shanhewan Qianxiang in Yinchuan City, which was known as the "slum" in the downtown area. There are hundreds of people living in dozens of families in the courtyard, and they are called "72 tenants" by outsiders.
Chen Yuefang's parents and older siblings are of moderate height, but she is the only one who is crazy to grow. When she was in the first grade of Shanhewan No. 15 Primary School, Chen Yuefang was as tall as her teacher, and she was ridiculed and discriminated against by children, and some children nicknamed her "Da Chen".

Chen Yuefang's uncle Chen Zhaolin is a member of the men's basketball team of the Lanzhou Military Region, and when he saw that his niece was surprisingly tall, he suggested that his brother and sister-in-law let Chen Yuefang apply for the Lanzhou Juvenile Amateur Sports School.
The coach took a fancy to Chen Yuefang's size and admitted her. But Chen Yuefang did not practice basketball, but practiced high jump.
In 1976, Chen Yuefang was just 13 years old and reached a height of 1.89 meters. Uncle Chen Zhaolin also recommended Chen Yuefang to the Bayi women's basketball team and the Lanzhou Military Region women's basketball team.
The coach of the Bayi women's basketball team came from Beijing to inspect Chen Yuefang, and saw that she couldn't play basketball at all, so she was not hired.

Zhou Hanxin, the women's basketball coach of the Lanzhou Military Region, took a fancy to Chen Yuefang's tall figure and asked her to come to the team for a trial. Zhou Hanxin found that Chen Yuefang has two major advantages: one is that her ten fingertips are strong and elastic, and the other is that Chen Yuefang can endure hardships and refuse to admit defeat, which are the necessary qualities of an excellent basketball player.
Although it was a little late to practice basketball at the age of 13, under the guidance of Coach Zhou Hanxin, Chen Yuefang practiced her basic skills hard and made rapid progress. In only 4 years, Chen Yuefang became the main center of the women's basketball team of the Lanzhou Military Region.
In May 1980, the All-Army held a first-class women's basketball league. Chen Yuefang started every game and was the team's top scorer, scoring 59 points in the most games, helping the Lanzhou Military Region win the league championship.

Subsequently, Beijing's Bayi women's basketball team discussed with the Lanzhou Military Region to seconded Chen Yuefang and asked her to help the Bayi women's basketball team play in the National First Division League. Coach Zhou Hanxin agreed in order to improve Chen Yuefang's skills.

So Chen Yuefang was seconded to the Bayi women's basketball team as the main center. In 1982, the 9th Asian Games were held in New Delhi, India. The Chinese women's basketball team successfully reached the final, and the opponent in the final was the South Korean women's basketball team, which had defeated them twice in the Asian Championships.
Chen Yuefang held her breath and was determined to defeat her opponent. After the final, Chen Yuefang gave full play to her air superiority and frequently scored on the inside, helping the Chinese women's basketball team defeat the South Korean team 75-67 and win the Asian Games.
In August 1983, Chen Yuefang participated in the Women's World Basketball Championship held in Brazil with the team. In the first game, the Chinese women's basketball team defeated the Canadian team 74-66.
Immediately afterwards, the Chinese women's basketball team defeated Zaire 90-47. In the group stage, the Chinese women's basketball team only lost to the former Soviet Union and entered the semifinals with the second place in the group.

Chen Yuefang's health is not good because she is too tall. She retired early in 1985, when she was just 22 years old.
After retiring, Chen Yuefang returned to work in the Physical Engineering Brigade of the Lanzhou Military Region. Soon Chen Yuefang was diagnosed with cerebral thrombosis, anemia, pituitary tumor, hepatitis, diabetes and other diseases, and she was hospitalized many times.

Although the hospital tried its best to rescue her, Chen Yuefang's health did not improve.
In 1990, her diabetes, pituitary tumor, and myocarditis worsened. At this time, Chen Yuefang was 27 years old, and she belonged to the older leftover girls in that era.
Because she was too tall and suffered from a variety of diseases, Chen Yuefang's personal problems became a problem. She is 2.08 meters tall, and she wants to find a boyfriend who is taller than herself, and her choice is very narrow.
In addition, Chen Yuefang has been in and out of the hospital all year round, and few people of the opposite sex take the initiative to pursue her. A colleague once introduced her to a partner, but the man politely refused.

In the early morning of September 18, 2000, Chen Yuefang unfortunately died of illness in the General Hospital of Lanzhou Military Region at the age of 37.
At that time, information was not developed, and many fans did not know that Chen Yuefang had passed away, and asked everywhere about her.
Chen Yuefang's tragic early death pushed her parents and older siblings into the abyss of grief, and it took many years for them to come out of their grief. Chen Yuefang has never been in love, has not been married, has no children and no daughters, and her life fate makes people sigh with emotion.

In September 2023, Chen Yuefang was inducted into the 2023 Chinese Basketball Hall of Fame nomination list, 23 years after Chen Yuefang's early death.
Chen Yuefang is the hero of the Chinese women's basketball team, although she has left us for 23 years, but her remarkable achievements have been recorded in the history of basketball in the mainland, and countless fans will always miss her!
