On October 30, it was reported that the 33-year-old former Chelsea midfielder "Drinking Brother" Drinkwater officially announced his retirement and ended his football career. Drinkwater said he couldn't get the opportunity to show his value, so he chose to retire. Although he received a lot of offers from clubs, he no longer had that passion.

The 33-year-old came through the Manchester United Academy and spent his time at Manchester United on loan spells at Huddersfield, Cardiff City, Watford and Barnsley. In early 2012, Drinkwater joined Leicester City from Manchester United for £750,000.

After joining Leicester City, Drinkwater led the team to the Premier League in his second season. He was named in the Championship Team of the Season and was voted Leicester City's Player of the Season.

The 2015/16 season was the pinnacle of Drinkwater's career, when he played 35 Premier League appearances, scoring two goals and providing seven assists as Leicester City won the Premier League title. He then spent another season at Leicester City before leaving to join Chelsea in the summer of 2017.

In the final minute of the 2017 summer window, Chelsea officially announced the signing of Danny Drinkwater for £35 million. After joining Chelsea, Drinkwater has been hampered by injuries and has not been in the same good form as before, scoring just one goal in 23 games in two years. Chelsea have since loaned him to the likes of Burnley, Aston Villa, Karspasa and Reading before leaving Chelsea when his contract expires in 2022.
