Chinese Navy Z-8 (Z-8) carrier-based helicopter

author:Fleet on the Great Waves

Brief introduction

After US President Richard Nixon's visit to China in 1972, relations between the West and China began to warm, and the mainland imported some advanced weapons from the West. The military seized the opportunity and introduced the French SA321 "Super Wasp" helicopter

The Z-8 is a Chinese version of the French SA321 Super Wasp helicopter, developed in 1976 and first flown in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province on December 11, 1985. In 1989, the first production Z-8 was delivered to the PLA Naval Aviation, Chinese China's first 13-ton helicopter and the largest helicopter produced in China, filling a gap.

However, due to the weak foundation, the specific performance of the imitation type and the original is significantly reduced, especially the "Turbo" III.C6 engine used in the SA321ja has a maximum take-off power (1590 hp), while the turboshaft-6 can only reach (1400 hp), and the life is only about 1/3 (3200 hours versus 1200 hours)

It was not until the 90s that the Z-8A was replaced with an improved turboshaft-6A engine, and the problems of poor reliability and insufficient power of the original turboshaft-6 engine were modified in a targeted manner, and the maximum output power was increased to (1630 horsepower) and the life of the whole machine reached 2,000 hours before basically reaching the performance of the French original

In order to further improve performance, the straight-8F that first flew in 2004 was replaced with a Pratt & Whitney PT6B-67A engine, the maximum output increased to (2000 horsepower), the life of the whole machine reached 4000 hours, the engine weight was only 220 kg, 110 kg less than the turboshaft-6, the power to weight ratio reached 6.6, and its cruise fuel consumption was only 0.35, which was 17% lower than the turboshaft-6 improved model, which made the helicopter performance have been significantly improved

Then the bottom of the hull was removed from the Army Straight-8G and Navy Straight-18 on the basis of the F-type

The Navy developed the early warning Z-18Y and the anti-submarine Z-18F on the basis of the Z-18

The straight-18L is a model with a wide fuselage redesigned on the basis of F, which is the ceiling of the current domestic transport helicopter (the domestic turboshaft-10 in its power options, finally has hope to get rid of imported engines)

With the entry of the 075, the gap of the Z-8 is still very large (from the current photo screen, the Z-8 is the only main force of the 075 carrier)
