Take the hearts of the people as your heart! Ye Zicheng: The Wisdom and Modern Meaning of Lao Tzu

■ Professor Ye Zicheng

Ye Zicheng pointed out that Lao Tzu was the first political thinker to put forward the idea of "taking the hearts of the people as the heart", and his political philosophy can be said to be the first political philosophy system in human history that "takes the hearts of the people as the heart".

Lament that Lao Tzu's political philosophy has no complete solution

Zhuangzi Liezi got his body, Huang Lao got his healing technique, the last Han Shen got his use, and Taoism used it for health, all of which failed to get the completeness of Lao Tzu.

Ye Zicheng believes that there are several problems in the comments on Lao Tzu's thought:

We do not see that Lao Tzu's entire ideological system is centered on political philosophy; it is impossible to distinguish between the five organic components of Lao Tzu's political tao, virtue tao, zhi dao, shu dao, and instrumental tao, such as confusing tao with art, and insufficient understanding of the values of "the four selfs of the people", "making up for losses and suppressing the move", and "ruling the country by law" in Lao Tzu's political tao; it is impossible to accurately distinguish the relationship between Lao Tzu's thought and the Zhuangzi school and the Huang Lao school, and so on.

Lao Tzu has 81 chapters, a total of more than 5,000 words, all written by Lao Tzu himself, not compiled by later generations. Thus, the essence of Lao Tzu's thought was preserved and studied by future generations. However, due to the difficulty of writing, version, reference, distinguishing factions, content and other reasons, Laozi thought has been misunderstood and misunderstood.

The essence of Lao Tzu's political philosophy and wisdom

Ye Zicheng said in his lecture that the three major schools of Taoism, Confucianism, and Law in China are actually political, and Lao Tzu is a systematic work of political philosophy. When we understand and learn the wisdom of Lao Tzu, we should not be confused by the version, nor should we be misled by what our predecessors saw, but should re-objectively and seriously study Lao Tzu's political thought.

■ Serious little listeners

Ye Zicheng pointed out that Lao Tzu was the first political thinker to put forward the idea of "taking the hearts of the people as the heart" and formed a political philosophy system of "taking the hearts of the people as the hearts". Lao Tzu's political philosophy can be said to be the first political philosophy system in human history that "takes the hearts of the people as the heart", and puts forward the trend and direction of the country's political development from the five aspects of political Tao, Moral Tao, Zhi Dao, Shu Dao, and Instrument Dao.

Political wisdom and modern significance with the hearts of the people at heart

In Lao Tzu's view, realizing the hearts of the people is the essence of politics; the politics of realizing the hearts of the people is the best politics of mankind. Lao Tzu's "people-oriented" and "people's hearts" must finally be implemented in all aspects of people's lives, so that it becomes an operational, achievable, and landable political philosophy.

Ye Zicheng said that although the rulers of the later Chinese dynasties did not govern the country and society in full accordance with Lao tzu's political thought, nor did they ever have real Taoist rule, even if they governed society with the skin of Lao Tzu's "people's four self" thought, it also had good results. For example, the rule of Han Wenjing, the rule of Tang Zhenguan, and the prosperity of Kaiyuan Shengshi in these periods were all because the rulers adopted Lao Tzu's ideological strategy of "ruling by doing nothing" and "four self-reliance of the people".

He believes that the humanistic ideas in Lao Tzu have influenced Chinese culture for more than two thousand years and are an indispensable part of the treasure house of Chinese culture.
