Chen Shiyu was born in April 1909 in Huangtupi, Wuchang, Hubei Province, to a poor family.

Unable to bear the oppression, Chen Shiyu returned to his hometown to join the Agricultural Cooperative, and under the organizational arrangement, joined the Guard Regiment of the Second Front.
On August 1, 1927, the Nanchang Uprising broke out, and the guard regiment marched from Wuchang to Nanchang, but when it arrived, the rebel troops had already moved south to Chaoshan, and Chen Shiyu participated in the Autumn Harvest Uprising with the guard regiment, and on the way to Jinggangshan, camped in a mountain village in Wenjia City, Liuyang.
One day, Chen Shiyu was standing guard at the mouth of the village, and a tall man with long hair and blue shirt reported himself as "Mao Runzhi", came from the copper drum, and looked for the commander-in-chief Lu Deming.
Chen Shiyu was full of doubts, and led the people to the headquarters, and he was running into Yang Lisan. When Yang Lisan saw Member Mao, he quickly came up to shake hands and greet him, and seeing Chen Shiyu's stunned look, Yang Lisan said: "You don't know yet, this is Member Mao." ”
In November 1927, the first red organization was created in Chaling County, and the 18-year-old Chen Shiyu became the soldier representative. Committee member Mao saw Chen Shiyu and happily called him "County Grand Master" and "Mountain King." Chen Shiyu thus became acquainted with Member Mao, and his inner identity and respect developed, and he followed him throughout his life.

The wrong command of Bo and Li led to the failure of the fifth anti-encirclement and suppression campaign, and the main Red Army was forced to shift strategically, and Chen Shiyu was then the commander of the red first army's teaching battalion. As his injuries gradually healed, Chen Shiyu's heart had already flown back to the anti-Japanese battlefield filled with gun smoke.
One day, a female soldier in military uniform came on horseback and handed Chen Shiyu a letter of condolence and 200 yuan, confessing that the chairman had bought him nutritional products, and also carried the words "early recovery and return to the front line." The female soldier rode away, and Chen Shiyu later learned that she was the chairman's newlywed wife.
Whoever had ever had this treatment, Chen Shiyu was moved to tears and was determined not to live up to the high expectations of the chairman.

In the spring of 1940, the Jinxi Independent Detachment advanced into Shandong and was assigned to the 115th Division. Soon, Chen Shiyu became the chief of staff of the 115th Division.
In November 1941, Tuqiao, commander of the Japanese 12th Army, once gathered more than 50,000 Japanese puppet troops to "encircle the iron wall" in the Yimeng Mountains. Chen Shiyu suggested transferring to the combined part of Mengshan and Lunan. Luo Ronghuan accepted the suggestion, and the troops were safely transferred to the Bushan mountain area.
In July 1946, Chen Shiyu and Tang Liang marched west into the southwest of Lu, and together with Chen Xie tuan, Liu Deng launched a mission to Dabie Mountain.
In March 1948, the situation changed drastically, and the chairman ordered Chen Shiyu and Tang Liang to unify the command of the "Chen Xie Corps" to launch the Luoyang Campaign. It is rare for the founding general to command the founding general. Chen Tang and Chen Xie worked together to liberate Luoyang and annihilate more than 20,000 enemy troops.

In 1955, Chen Shiyu was awarded the rank of general and was awarded 3 first-class medals.

On July 22, 1995, Chen Shiyu died, and before his death, he personally wrote "Fengqiao Night Berth". General Chen Shiyu's ashes were buried in two places: one is the memorial forest of the Great Wall of the Iron Army on the Jiugong Mountain in Huairou, Beijing, and the other is the Malan Martyrs' Cemetery in Xinjiang, where he led 100,000 engineers to "make a nest" for his old partner of two bombs and one star, General Zhang Aiping.
