On the afternoon of October 4, on the cloud map of the Fengyun-4 high-definition visible satellite, a large and round typhoon dog was clearly visible approaching the eastern coast of mainland Taiwan. Although previously disturbed by adverse atmospheric circulation factors, Typhoon Puppy once weakened, but as it gradually moved westward, the atmospheric circulation conditions changed and the sea temperature increased, Typhoon Puppy strengthened again, and this afternoon the wind eye structure in the center became clear again, reaching the level of a super typhoon. Typhoon Puppy blew record winds.
As the No. 14 typhoon this year, Typhoon Puppy is the strongest super typhoon in the western Pacific since October this year, and its central wind once reached 16. When Typhoon Puppy began to approach the southern coast of Taiwan, radar detection showed that its central eye was very clear and round, which meant that despite being close to land, Typhoon Puppy remained powerful.
Typhoon Puppy is currently moving westward and is expected to pass or make landfall off the southern coast of mainland Taiwan in the next 24 hours. As Typhoon Puppy approached, the wind and rain in the southeast coast of mainland Taiwan rapidly strengthened. In particular, Lanyu, a small island located in the southeast of Taiwan, experienced a very violent wind and rain under the frontal attack of Typhoon Dog.
According to monitoring data, at 21 o'clock on the evening of October 4, the Lanyu National Station at an altitude of 324 meters observed a violent gust of 74.9 meters per second, far exceeding the upper limit of wind speed of 17. The wind speed of Lanyu High School on the beach also reached 55.2 m/s, and the gust was as high as 77.6 m/s, which was also far more than 17.
What is even more shocking is that according to the data of the Lanyu Weather Station, it is suspected that a historic wind speed of 95.2 m/s was recorded during the period of 21-22 hours! If this data is confirmed, it will break the recorded wind speed records in mainland China and even Asia. Whether this data is true or not, other previous data from the region are enough to prove that the puppy is likely to still maintain the intensity of a super typhoon. It is conceivable that as the eye of the typhoon dog is arriving at Lanyu, this small island must have experienced a violent storm like shaking the ground.
Typhoon Puppy will next affect Guangdong and Fujian. According to the forecast of the Central Meteorological Observatory, Typhoon Puppy is about to graze or make landfall on the southern coast of mainland Taiwan, and then continue westward, gradually approaching the eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian coasts, and is expected to come to the eastern Guangdong coast on October 7. The good news is that the Central Meteorological Observatory predicts that Typhoon Puppy will weaken significantly as it approaches Fujian, Guangdong, and may even gradually weaken to a tropical storm or even a tropical depression when it comes to the coastal waters of Guangdong.
However, due to the large size and wide impact of Typhoon Dog, the coastal areas of Guangdong and Fujian will still face the impact of strong winds, heavy rain, huge waves, storm surges and other disasters after passing through southern Taiwan. According to the forecast of the Central Meteorological Observatory, from 20 o'clock on the evening of the 4th to 20 o'clock on the 5th, there will be heavy to heavy rain in the central and eastern parts of Taiwan Island, heavy rain in parts of the eastern part of Taiwan Island, and even exceptionally heavy rain (250-300 mm) locally. Next, the heavy rainfall will gradually spread to eastern Guangdong and other places.
In addition to this, a narrow tube effect may occur as Typhoon Puppy will pass through the narrow waters of the Northeast South China Sea - Taiwan Strait, coupled with the southward movement of cold air from the north. The so-called narrow pipe effect is the phenomenon that the wind is squeezed in a narrow place and accelerated. It's like when we walk into the windward corridor and feel that the wind is particularly strong. Under the squeeze of the narrow terrain of the Taiwan Strait, the wind speed on the north side of the typhoon may be further accelerated, forming more violent winds, sometimes even exceeding the typhoon itself.
Supercomputer forecasts indicate that the strength of the wind on the north side will increase as Typhoon Puppy skims over the sea. Therefore, the coastal areas of Fujian should be vigilant against the wind disaster that may be brought by Typhoon Dog. Under the influence of Typhoon Dog, residents in Guangdong, Fujian and Taiwan need to be prepared for typhoon, pay attention to wind and rain disasters, and ensure the safety of people and property.
At the same time, local meteorological departments should also strengthen monitoring and early warning work, and provide accurate weather information in a timely manner to help residents make reasonable countermeasures.
