My home is in Shaanzhou District, Sanmenxia City, which was formerly called Shaanxian County, and for the needs of economic development, the old name was restored to Shaanzhou.
As a Shaanzhou native, I have always felt a little humiliated in my heart, because the jurisdiction of Shaanzhou District is getting smaller and smaller!
Originally established in the reign of King Hui of Qin in 390 BC, Shaanxian County was one of the earliest counties in China, and was renamed Shaanzhou in 487 AD during the Northern Wei Dynasty.
During the Tang Dynasty, Pinglu County and Ruicheng County north of the Yellow River belonged to Shaanzhou, which straddled the north and south banks of the Yellow River.
By the time of the Northern Song Dynasty, Shaanzhou District included the current Shaanzhou District, Huixing, Jiaokou, Yadi, Gaomiao, Cizhonghe Development Zone, Luoning County, Yuchi County, Lingbao City, Pinglu County, Ruicheng County, and Xia County, which was part of the largest jurisdiction of the old Shaanxi Prefecture.
In later history, the area of old Shaanzhou became smaller and smaller, no longer including Luoning, Lingbao, Yuchi, Pinglu, Ruicheng and Xia County, only including Shaanxian County and a few townships in the lakeside district of Sanmenxia, after Sanmenxia was set up as a prefecture-level city, Jiaokou, Cizhong, Huixing, Gaomiao, Cliff Bottom and Development Zone were carved out of Shaanxi County and given to the lakeside area, and Shaanzhou District became smaller again.
In recent years, Sanmenxia City has set up an industrial cluster area around the West Railway Station, and the jurisdiction of Shaanzhou District is even smaller.
Perhaps one day, the West Railway Station, Wentang, Zhangwan, Yuandian and Daying of Shaanzhou District may be included in the Sanmenxia urban area, and the scope of Shaanzhou District may be further reduced.
