The Great Wall self-guided commentary allows tourists to say goodbye to "visit here"

Only set up a cultural protection logo, lack of multi-angle cultural interpretation... In some Great Wall scenic spots, many tourists can only walk to see the flowers, and the travel experience is limited to "visiting here". In May this year, the construction of the Panlongshan Great Wall self-guided interpretation sign system was completed, and the Great Wall cultural interpretation sign with rich content was set up in the open section of the scenic spot, explaining the historical evolution, facility structure, disease causes, protection concepts, etc. of the Panlongshan Great Wall, changing the previous mode of simply watching the scenery on the Great Wall, promoting the integration of culture and tourism in a real sense, and bringing tourists a different travel experience.

Panlongshan Great Wall is located in Gubeikou Town, Miyun District, announced in 2013 as a national key cultural protection unit, 5 kilometers of the Great Wall densely covered with 36 enemy buildings, together with Crouching Tiger Mountain Great Wall, Shuiguan Great Wall, Tiemen Pass, etc. together constitute the Gubeikou Great Wall defense system. Compared with those well-known Great Wall scenic spots, the Panlongshan Great Wall has not been extensively repaired and developed, and tourists can focus on visiting ancient times. The reporter of Beijing Youth Daily climbed along the scenic trail to the ruins of Shipo Guguan, and the self-guided commentary sign came into view - a sign under the city wall drew a panorama of the Great Wall, allowing people to see the direction of the Panlongshan Great Wall at a glance, and the experience of climbing the Great Wall began here.

From the site of Shipoguguan to the west and then climb to the "General Building", the self-guided explanation sign in the enemy platform records: The general building is the enemy platform No. 309 Miyun, with a side length of 10 meters and a height of 8.7 meters, and the bricks used by the enemy platform have the stamp of the traditional character "Wan Li Qi Nian Wall Road Construction"... Scan the QR code on the signage and experience the audio explanation service, listening to the story of the General Building while walking.

Further east to Miyun No. 306 enemy platform, its building collapsed badly, and the remaining wall in the southeast corner had tilted. In order to eliminate the danger of the site and preserve the state of the cultural relics, the cultural relics department adopted protective measures with steel structure support. In response to this measure, there are specific text introductions and illustrations on the enemy's Taiwan signs, so that tourists can understand the protection concept of the Great Wall. Scanning the QR code on the sign, you can also see a black-and-white photograph taken in 1982, which shows that the enemy platform of Miyun No. 306 was badly damaged at that time, but it has not yet been supported and protected.

The remains of the "Twenty-Four Eyes Tower" in the easternmost part of the scenic area are the landmark buildings of the Panlongshan Great Wall. The signage here explains the protection concept of the cultural relics department - in view of the current situation of the "24 Eyes Tower", the method of least disturbing the original relics and maintaining the sense of ancient vicissitudes of the site is adopted, reflecting the concept of minimal intervention in cultural relics protection.

It is understood that the self-guided interpretation sign of the Panlongshan Great Wall not only introduces the enemy Taiwan, but also pays attention to the multi-perspective interpretation of the Great Wall, and is divided into 7 categories in content design: "comprehensive category" includes overall explanation, historical evolution, etc.; "Facilities Class" explains enemy platforms, convenience doors, gates, brick kilns, etc.; "Structure" mainly expresses the architectural details of the Great Wall, such as the fence water, hanging eyes, and battlement walls, to guide the public to observe and understand more carefully; "Stories" include explanations of the Gubeikou war, descriptions of the Great Wall text bricks, etc.; "Literature" directly records relevant records, such as quoting the records in Qi Jiguang's "Jixiao New Book: Hanging Eye System"; The "disease" explanation explains the weathering, cracks and other phenomena of the Great Wall; "Protection" explains steel structure support reinforcement, heavy masonry and other projects.

It is worth mentioning that while conveying information, these signs are not visually overwhelming, and some signs are looming under the cover of plants, naturally integrated into the wild charm of the Panlongshan Great Wall, and harmoniously coexist with the Great Wall.

"In order to preserve the vicissitudes of the Panlongshan Great Wall, no large-scale repairs have been carried out in recent years, and only necessary emergency reinforcements have been made, which makes the historical information of the Panlongshan Great Wall in various periods relatively rich." Li Junchen, who is in charge of cultural relics work at the Civic Activity Center of Gubeikou Town, Miyun District, said that on this basis, with self-guided interpretation signs, the structure, history, characteristics and protection concepts of the Great Wall can be fully presented to the public.

Self-guided commentary sparks public interest in the Great Wall

Interlocutor: Professor Tang Yuyang of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture

In recent years, the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage has strengthened cooperation between government and school, established the "Beijing Great Wall Culture Research Institute" with Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and carried out a series of project practices including "Great Wall Self-guided Interpretation Sign". As the project leader of the "Panlongshan Great Wall Self-guided Interpretation Signage System", Professor Tang Yuyang of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture explained its design concept.

Beijing Youth News: What are the functions of the Great Wall self-guided interpretation sign?

Tang Yuyang: I have visited some Great Wall scenic spots, except for a cultural protection sign, there are no other signs, tourists are purely "visiting here". The content of the Great Wall self-guided commentary sign is very rich, covering the history of cultural relics, character stories, etc., scanning the QR code with the mobile phone, as well as extended reading content and audio explanation, tourists can walk and understand according to their personal wishes.

Beijing Youth News: Why did the self-guided commentary sign choose to build on the Panlongshan Great Wall?

Tang Yuyang: Gubeikou Town, Miyun District, where the Panlongshan Great Wall is located, is the key area of the Great Wall National Cultural Park and the only Chinese historical and cultural town in Beijing. The Gubeikou Town Government is very supportive of this project, hoping to improve the quality of the local cultural tourism industry through the establishment of a self-guided interpretive signage system, and then promote local culture and economic development.

Beijing Youth News: In the process of design and implementation, how to deal with the relationship between the sign and the Great Wall?

Tang Yuyang: Self-guided interpretive signs not only disseminate accurate information, but also reduce the adverse impact on the Great Wall, so we put a lot of thought into the number of signage plates, not the more the better, and finally the signage is controlled at about 50 pieces, and the distance between 40 meters and 60 meters. The color of the sign should also be as close as possible to the nearby building, for example, the sign placed on the Great Wall body is mostly gray, and the material should also avoid reflection. In the choice of the location of the signage, we hope that visitors can enjoy the surrounding scenery while watching the commentary.

Beijing Youth News: You proposed that "the goal of interpretation is not to teach, but to inspire". How to understand the concept of "excitation"?

Tang Yuyang: When writing the commentary, we try to be accurate, professional, concise and easy to understand. On this basis, we hope that the explanatory content will stimulate visitors' interest and research on the Great Wall, rather than simply informing. Because the commentary text is bilingual in Chinese and English, the Panlongshan Great Wall bilingual study activity was also carried out, which was a good feedback and surprise for us.

Beijing Youth News: In terms of the current presentation effect, what aspects do you think can be improved?

Tang Yuyang: I think the classification of explanatory signs can be further refined, for example, different colors can be used to let the public know which signs are the explanation of the damage process of the Great Wall and which are the structural practices of the Great Wall; In terms of content, it can also be continuously expanded and extended, such as adding comparative photos before and after the protection project, sharing the results of Great Wall archaeology, Great Wall research, and Great Wall repair with the public in recent years, and then promoting the systematization of the Great Wall interpretation and signage.
