The Nintendo Switch has surpassed the Wii in U.S. sales as one of the best-selling consoles of all time. The Switch's success can be attributed to its unique combination of portable and console gaming, powerful first-party gaming, and higher hardware availability.
The Switch's huge success can be compared to another of Nintendo's consoles: the Wii. Released in 2006 as a competitor to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the Nintendo Wii, with its innovative real-time motion controls and an impressive wide variety of local co-op and split-screen games, makes it ideal for families and non-traditional gamers. Although the Wii was eventually phased out in 2012 and replaced by the Nintendo Wii U, it sold more than 100 million units worldwide, making it the fifth-best-selling home console of all time.
According to a new report from Circana, Nintendo Switch surpasses Wii sales in the U.S. in 2023. While the report doesn't give exact numbers, Nintendo itself says more than 129.5 million consoles have been sold worldwide, with 49 million of them coming from the Americas. The surge in sales is attributed to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom The company launched on the Switch in May, with 18 million units reportedly sold at the end of June alone.
Recently, rumors about its next generation have begun to surface. While Nintendo hasn't announced anything about the new generation, Microsoft's leaked documents say the next Nintendo console could be released as early as next year, a possibility supported by industry insiders. Recent leaks hinted at new features for this so-called Switch next generation, such as magnetic attachments, to enhance gameplay and improve backwards compatibility.
