From 2005 to 2015, economic cooperation between China and Taiwan reached a historical peak, and Taiwanese enterprises such as TSMC enjoyed the dividends of the "favoring Taiwan" policy, with which they obtained a large number of orders. However, with the changes in the cross-strait political landscape, especially after the election of Tsai Ing-wen in 2016, cross-strait relations have gradually changed. This turning point caused TSMC to turn to the United States, while at the same time cutting off supplies to mainland technology companies such as Huawei.
With Huawei's success in the global 5G field, the United States began to impose comprehensive sanctions on China in the field of science and technology, using the advantages of its semiconductor industry to suppress Chinese mainland. As the world's largest chip foundry, TSMC chose to stand on the side of the United States in this scientific and technological war, further estranged from the mainland.
But China has not been defeated by this technological cold war. Although TSMC has chosen to be the enemy of China, the Chinese mainland semiconductor industry continues to emerge in the face of adversity. SMIC's successful R&D has enabled it to achieve mass production of 28nm chips, Chinese mainland gradually becoming self-sufficient in the semiconductor field and challenging the global chip foundry market leader.
The recent trade investigation conducted by China's Ministry of Commerce on TSMC and other semiconductor giants is a response to TSMC's choice to ally with the United States, and also shows the mainland's confidence in the semiconductor industry. Not only that, Huawei will also release a new generation of 5G chips, showing that China has not only not been defeated by sanctions, but has accelerated the development of independent technology in a difficult situation.
In this scientific and technological war, Chinese mainland has made continuous breakthroughs in adversity with its indomitable spirit, showing unparalleled innovation and development momentum.
