Fuzhou roadside trees now insects spit silk knot mesh resembling "plastic wrap"

Fuzhou News Network, September 1 (reporter Shi Leilei / Wen Jin'an District Garden Center photo) dozens of larvae climbed on the trunk of the tree, spit silk knot net, overnight to the trunk of the entire tree wrapped a layer of "plastic wrap." Since late August, the humid and hot climate in downtown Fuzhou has caused a strange phenomenon to appear on individual trees in roads and parks. According to Song Haitian, a teacher at the Fujian Academy of Forestry Sciences, this phenomenon is caused by the insects of the genus Lepidoptera borer family - "single-spined yellow-edged grass borer".

It can wrap one tree a day or it can be caused by damp heat

On August 31, when the staff of the Jinjishan Park Management Office in Jin'an District was patrolling the mountain forest, they found that next to the park's winding mountain road, there was a large-leaf fig with a layer of "film" attached. At the scene, the staff found no trace of adult insect activity, but found dozens of yellow-brown larvae of about 2 centimeters. "Less than a day after we found the first plant, the one next to it was also wrapped up overnight." A staff member told reporters.

On September 1, the expert team of the Fujian Academy of Forestry Sciences inspected the site and identified the insect as "yellow-edged grass borer". Experts tore open the "membrane," cleaned the larvae from the trunks, and instructed the park's staff to control them by spraying.

Interestingly, a similar situation has occurred on the sidewalk trees in downtown Fuzhou.

According to the Fuzhou Municipal Greening Management Office, they also received clues about the appearance of this insect on Daoshan Road and Baima Road. The sidewalk trees of these roads are also dominated by large-leaf figs. The relevant person in charge of the Municipal Greening Management Office said that in the past few years, the street trees in Fuzhou have also encountered this situation, mainly in the case of relatively humid and hot weather, and have not produced relatively large harm. They will consult experts to carry out professional control of insects.

It is a native insect that is non-toxic and easy to control

Since this insect is still in the larval stage, it is difficult to tell which kind of yellow-edged grass borer it is. Some people say it is a single-spined yellow-edged grass borer, and some people say it is a round-spotted yellow-edged grass borer.

Song Haitian, a teacher at the Fujian Academy of Forestry Sciences, said that the two insects are "close relatives" and mainly look at the markings on the wings. The "round-spotted yellow-edged grass borer" has a circular pattern on its wings. Judging from past experience, the one-spined yellow-edged grass borer that appears in JinjiShan Park is infested.

Previously, the forestry department also found this insect in Fuzhou National Forest Park and Fuzhou Children's Park. "The larvae of other moths generally eat leaves, and the single-spined yellow-edged borer eats bark. They generally appear where the bark decays and cracks. Spitting wire knot net, is used as a kind of protection. Teacher Song said that there is no evidence that this insect will only appear on the body of the big leaf fig.

Some citizens also said that they felt very uncomfortable seeing the single-spined yellow-edged borer. Teacher Song said that this insect is non-toxic, and the public does not have to panic.

As for how to deal with the single-spined yellow-edged grass borer, Teacher Song said that it is enough to use ordinary insecticides: "This insect has the strongest resistance to stress during the pupal stage. At present, they are only larvae, which can be controlled by manual cleaning and spraying. ”
