In September 2022, Mr. Wang, a Shanghai resident, reported the case to the Nanjing West Road Police Station of the Jing'an Public Security Branch:
Aunt Wang, a mother in her 60s, was obsessed with film and television star Jin Dong, joined a "star fan group", and participated in the so-called "aid investment" and "public welfare projects" through transfer behind her family's back, smashing 200,000 yuan back and forth. Mr. Wang suspected that his mother had been deceived.
According to Mr. Wang's recollection, his mother had to chat in the live broadcast room of "Jin Dong" every day, and he repeatedly failed to dissuade him. Mr. Wang noticed that the live broadcast room was set against the background of Jin Dong's photo, and occasionally there was a voice chat session.
What's even more strange is that there are no real people in the live broadcast room at all, in addition to the background, an idol video is usually played, supplemented by a gentle narration, saying "Although I am a star, I am also an ordinary person, and I hope to make true friends"...
Mr. Wang's search found that Jin Dong's official account had never carried out such live interactive activities, let alone a so-called "private live broadcast room". But even though Mr. Wang pointed out doubts to his mother many times, Aunt Wang still found it difficult to resist the sweet offensive of "idols" and kept giving away her savings. Mr. Wang could only call the police for help.
After receiving the report and filing the case, the Jing'an police repeatedly came to the door to dissuade Aunt Wang from fraud, but Aunt Wang had been deeply brainwashed, firmly believing that the other party was the real "star", refusing to cooperate with the police investigation, insisting that it was her right to give money to whom.
From beginning to end, Aunt Wang refused to even hand over her mobile phone, let alone provide any valuable clues. The police could only use the mother's passbook information provided by Mr. Wang to activate the police-bank cooperation mechanism to sort out the victim's financial flow and information flow, but with little success.
In April this year, Mr. Wang secretly obtained his mother's mobile phone and memorized clues such as the account number of the live broadcast room, chat and barrage records to provide to the police. Combined with previous investigation records, the police quickly identified the gangs behind the opening of "celebrity private live broadcast rooms" on short video platforms and their personnel organizational structure.
This criminal gang led by Wang invites fans to join various "fan groups" and "support groups" through fictitious celebrities and star identities, from "joining the group" to "live interaction" to adding WeChat "private chat", step by step to induce victims to establish emotional connections with "stars", and then demand money for various reasons such as "investment, public welfare, support, and love". In addition to film and television artists, the celebrity identities fabricated by criminal gangs also include financial celebrities and industry leaders.
Members of criminal gangs are scattered in many provinces and cities across the country. From May to July this year, Shanghai Jing'an police went to many provinces and cities to carry out net collection operations, and arrested eight members of criminal gangs such as Wang.
The suspect explained the process of the crime
According to the criminal suspect Wang, the star photos and video materials he used in the live broadcast were downloaded online, and the star voice used in the interaction process was also a voice-changing audio modified by software.
Other gang members are mainly responsible for recruiting and maintaining "fans", they screen those attracted by "star idols", pull them into the so-called "celebrity private fan group", and then the gang members add WeChat to communicate emotionally with the victims as "stars", and sometimes send some "small gifts", such as red wine, perfume, etc. in return. When the victim puts down his guard and believes that it is true, the criminal gang turns to the traditional "pig killing plate" mode and carries out targeted fraud.
Up to now, the police have verified that the five victims in many provinces and cities are basically elderly people in their 60s, and the amount involved is nearly one million yuan.
According to the fraud gang, when selecting potential targets, they will investigate the victim's identity information and family situation in advance, look for single older women or elderly groups to deceive, take advantage of their lack of "spiritual sustenance" and the weakness of relatively empty life, and break through the victim's defense with care and love.
At present, eight people including criminal suspect Wang have been taken criminal compulsory measures by the Jing'an police in accordance with the law on suspicion of fraud, and the case is under further investigation.

Obviously, this is not Jin Dong's own Douyin account at all, but someone impersonating actor Jin Dong.
Recently, psychologists have communicated with Aunt Huang to understand, worried that she has suffered from fantasy, and suggested that the family be cautious and take Aunt Huang to the hospital for another examination.
Jin Dong Studio issued a statement on October 13, 2020, saying that Jin Dong did not open an account on the short video platform, and the account involved was fake, suspected of infringing Jin Dong's portrait rights and name rights. The studio will be held accountable through legal channels.
