As a symbol of a country, the president should represent strength, but why would Serbian President Vučić express so "humble" to the Chinese ambassador that he wants the Chinese delegation to visit Serbia?
The following three main reasons can be used to analyze why the President of Serbia is like this.
Kosovo crisis
Since the beginning of the Kosovo war, Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo have clashed over long-standing ethnic tensions.
In 2022, a conflict between the two communities broke out, and the Kosovo government, despite the opposition of the Serbs, resolutely promoted the replacement of Serbian license plates with Kosovo-exclusive license plates, and deliberately erased the Serbian traces immediately in Kosovo.
This provoked a large number of Serb opposition, and some Serb government officials also chose to resign in protest against the government.
The latest cause of the conflict was that on April 23, 2023, the Kosovo authorities held elections for government officials, but in the elections that were supposed to be referendums, only a dozen people in Serb-populated areas had the opportunity to vote.
As a result, Albanians were elected, which also caused dissatisfaction among Serbs.
The Kosovo authorities, on the other hand, insisted on sticking to the results and sent armed police forces to suppress the local Serbs.
This move also became the trigger for the conflict, the border situation was highly tense, and Vučić also sent troops in time to maintain peace on the Serbian border. And NATO also sent troops into Kosovo to maintain order.
In this regard, the Chinese side urges the Kosovo authorities to stop their improper behavior and take the initiative to conduct peaceful talks with the Serbian side to ensure regional peace.
The EU also said that this matter was unilaterally provoked by the Kosovo authorities, but did not support or oppose it.
Russian-Ukrainian conflict
The European Union announced that because Russia invaded Ukrainian land, it would launch large-scale sanctions, and most countries in the EU immediately responded.
However, the European Commission is very cunning, threatening that if Serbia does not join the sanctions, it will be subject to corresponding sanctions and will not be able to join the EU. And Vučić, faced with such hegemony, said that he would not sanction Russia for this.
But in the face of Serbia's declining economy, Vučić had to make another compromise, saying: "If the interests of the Serbian people are violated, they must not sanction Russia in order to protect themselves." ”
But it is also understandable that Serbia is now seeking to join the European Union for development, and if the EU sanctions Serbia, then the Serbian people will be in dire straits.
China-Cyprus relations
Serbia and Montenegro jointly formed the FRY shortly after the dissolution of the Republic of Yugoslavia in 1993, but since its establishment, the FRY has been in constant crisis.
Kosovo, once under the jurisdiction of the Serbian province, wanted independence, so the FRY went to war with Kosovo.
At this time, NATO brazenly launched the Kosovo War to strike at the Yugoslav army, and also bombed the Chinese embassy.
NATO denies that it was a deliberate bombing, but we all know that NATO did it on purpose and caused the sacrifice of our personnel.
The relationship between China and Serbia has been very good from beginning to end, and a strategic partnership was established in 2009 and deepened into a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2016.
However, Western countries see China's development in Europe, feel that China wants to increase its presence in Europe, feel threatened, and constantly obstruct it.
But Serbia sees Western opposition as air, and has demonstrated cooperation with China based on the Belt and Road Initiative, while China has also assisted Serbia in infrastructure projects for road bridges.
And when the European Union and the United States are sanctioning Huawei, Serbia welcomes Huawei to build 5G base stations, which shows that the relationship between China and Serbia is very strong.
In April 2022, Serbia purchased Chinese weapons for its own national security reasons, and the EU threatened that it would not join the EU.
After China proposed the One Belt, One Road policy, Serbia was also the first Eastern European country to stand up and express its support, and signed many trade agreements with China.
And during the epidemic, China actively helped Serbia through the difficult period.
This also shows that the relationship between China and Cyprus is inseparable, so the people of Vienna are grateful to China.
It is precisely because of the above three points that it can be seen that Serbia is in dire straits, and Vučić is also helpless, he believes that only China can really contribute to Serbia's development.
Therefore, I want to promote in-depth cooperation with China in the development of the Belt and Road Initiative, cooperation in the field of energy, foreign trade and exports and other fields during my term of office.
Therefore, I want to invite high-level Chinese officials to visit Serbia. I also hope to personally thank China for its help to Serbia.
