WMO: Last week was the hottest week on record
The World Meteorological Organization released a report on the 10th local time that according to preliminary data, the world has just experienced the hottest week on record. In addition, this past June was also the hottest June on record, with sea surface temperatures reaching new highs and Antarctic sea ice reaching record lows.
Christopher Hewitt, Director of Climate Services at the World Meteorological Organization, said: "The unusually warm June and early July occurred at the beginning of the development of El Niño, which is expected to further exacerbate heat on land and oceans and lead to more extreme temperatures and marine heatwaves. He also said that as El Niño develops further, more extreme weather may occur, and these effects are expected to continue until 2024.
