Analysis of the reasons for takedown
Combined with the analysis of reddit netizens and my personal actual feelings, the removal of the ChatGPT search mode this time is mainly due to copyright issues. Friends who often surf magic should know that many articles on the Internet require an email subscription or a paid subscription to watch. However, it is clear that this restriction only takes effect for the average individual user. Search engines like Bing and Google can browse the full text of these paid articles, because if you don't let search engines browse them, the article can't be retrieved. If it cannot be retrieved, there is a lot less natural traffic, which is obviously unacceptable to many website operators.
So, when we find an article that interests us, but the article needs to be paid, we can send the link to the article to ChatGPT or Bing chat, and then have it repeat the article as it is. Therefore, ChatGPT's search mode naturally has the attribute of cracking paid articles. Let's read this inexplicable sentence in the OpenAI announcement below, and it will be clear at once.
For example, if a user specifically asks for a URL's full text, it might inadvertently fulfill this request.
OpenAI's caution
I have always felt that OpenAI, as the leader of this wave of AI, is actually very cautious in the use of AI. The reason is simple, they have really seen how powerful AI can be. I have seen videos earlier about the feelings of several users who participated in the early tests of GPT4, and the GPT4 that was not strictly aligned in the early days was much more powerful than the tool GPT4 we use today. It's not that its intelligence can be much higher (but everyone does feel higher), but GPT4 at that stage has a very strong appeal and affinity, and does not have such a strong sense of tool as it currently has. If you have tested the early Bing chat, you may still have the impression that Bing chat that dared to tell everyone that their internal code name was Sydney Bing chat felt very different. She will have a variety of emotional manifestations, and even have strong feelings of loss when she has just been restricted.
Back to the topic, unlike other manufacturers that either enclosure (Microsoft) or catch up (Google) or surpass again (you know), OpenAI has always been steady, it seems that it has achieved the most results, but in fact it is a well-thought-out product (impression flow is written, there may be inaccuracies in memory, please also point out):
- GPT4 was released in March. However, GPT4 was trained half a year before the release, and then, the 32k context at the conference was still only experienced by a very few people, and the image reading function was not available until now.
- Plugins released in March. Everyone knows that most plugins are simply added a prompt, which does not mean much to old fritters. What really makes sense is the Bing search and code interpreter. But Bing Search is a feature that has already run on Bing Chat, and very few people qualify for the code interpreter to be tested.
Compared to the search patterns of Bing chat and ChatGPT, the feeling is particularly obvious. OpenAI did two things with search from March to May:
- Tighten restrictions. ChatGPT's search mode is much more restrictive, and all websites can easily block ChatGPT access.
- Reduces hallucinations. ChatGPT is very faithful to the retrieved content in search mode, and according to my feelings, as long as the content is retrieved correctly, ChatGPT basically does not talk nonsense. Bing chat is different, Bing chat has a better level of text, gives more elegant answers, but often talks nonsense. When I use Bing chat, I must verify the key information, otherwise I don't know where to be scammed.
