OpenAIChatGPTGenerative AI: Generative AI

In the field of artificial intelligence, the fastest core is natural language processing (NLP).

The large-scale prediction model based on natural language processing technology makes the art of artificial intelligence shine and be wonderful.

Use artificial intelligence to generate poetry, paintings, novels, videos, music, and so on...

It's really dazzling!

However, all this seems to have been predicted by a cartoonist 100 years ago!

The cartoonist's name is Harold Tucker Webster.

Harold Tucker Webster was an American cartoonist born September 21, 1885, and died September 22, 1952. His works span from the 1920s to the 1950s, and influential works include "The Cowardly Soul", "The Bridge", and "Life's Darkest Hour".

In 1923, H. T. Webster created a humorous cartoon for the New York World, in which he depicted a fictional 2023 machine that could generate ideas and automatically draw them into a caricature.

The cartoon is titled "In 2023, all our work will be done by electricity".

In the comics, a machine suspended from the ceiling is labeled "creative generator" and fed into an ink and pen machine. Another machine, labeled "cartoon generator," was attached to the arm of the pen and appeared to control the movement of the device.

A cartoonist stands at his drawing table, over the phone, discussing with friends about their social activities and making plans, while the "creative generator" is constantly generating ideas and the "cartoon generator" is constantly rendering artwork. The automatically generated artwork is printed and placed in the lower right corner of the frame.

In 1923, yes, exactly 100 years ago, this cartoon by H. T. Webster seemed to successfully predict the latest advances in artificial intelligence image synthesis.

A full century later, 100 years from now, that is, 2023, as depicted in H. T. Webster's cartoons, is today, and the scenario of life is not exactly what today's neural networks and generative artificial intelligence bring us?!

Generative AI can actually automate the creation of artwork.

The "Creative Generator" is likely to be a large language model like the GPT-3 (though not perfect), while the "Cartoon Generator" most closely resembles an image composition model like Stable Diffusion.

In the last week or two, the cartoon has been circulating on the global network.

In fact, as early as 2014, a well-known blogger, Paleofuture, introduced Webster's cartoon on his blog, especially this cartoon, pointing out that in the early 20s, only 35% of Americans had electricity at home.

In 1920, only 35 percent of Americans had electricity in their homes. However, by the end of the 1920s, that percentage had jumped to nearly 70 percent, with an even higher percentage of urban Americans. By 1929, about 85 percent of Americans living in cities were using electricity in their homes.

Americans in the 1920s witnessed a huge explosion in residential electricity use. Electricity and the equipment it drives represent a whole new way of getting work done.
