According to the report of the Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed an ultra-high integration optical convolution processor, and the relevant research results are titled Compact optical convolution processing unit based on multimode interference, published in Nature Communications, DOI:10.1038/s41467-023-38786-x), the chip is expected to be 1.5-10 times faster than NVIDIA.

Inspired by the biological visual nervous system
The convolution processor developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences is inspired by the biological visual nervous system, using optical computing technology, providing a "transmission is computing, structure is function" computing architecture, with large bandwidth, low latency, low power consumption and other advantages, is expected to avoid the data tidal transmission problem in the von Neumann computing paradigm, the team constructed three 2×2 related real-valued convolution kernels (Figure 1) through two 4×4 multimode interference couplers and four phase shifters, innovatively combining wavelength division multiplexing technology with multi-mode interference of light. The Kernel element is characterized by wavelength, the input-to-output mapping realizes the multiplication operation in the convolution, the wavelength division multiplexing and photoelectric conversion realize the addition operation in the convolution, and the correlation convolution kernel reconstruction is realized by adjusting the four thermal modulation phase shifters (Figure 2).
Simply put, this technology is a new architecture that adopts the principle of biological visual nervous system, combines optical computing technology, breaks the traditional chip architecture, innovatively realizes multiplication and addition operations directly through light waves, and realizes "transmission is computation, structure is function" through optical computing technology.
This major technological breakthrough undoubtedly provides a new and more reliable direction for the mainland's high-end chip overtaking, and then it is waiting for improvement and optimization, and finally mass production, completely breaking the blockade of Western high-end chips.

The United States began to loosen chip restrictions
Seeing the breakthrough of mainland chips, the United States began to relax, planning to extend the exemption period for export controls to South Korea and Wanwan, intending to seize the market of our existing chips through low-end chips such as South Korea, interrupting the process of the existing chip industry chain in the mainland, I believe that many of our domestic enterprises will not buy their low-end chips again, when our high-end chips come out, even if the other party releases the control again, we will not hesitate to refuse to purchase their chips.
China is in the absolute king in the fields of photovoltaic, 5G, mobile Z payment, new energy, etc., and I believe that in the future, our high-end chips will also become the absolute king of the world.
