What is norovirus?

Norovirus belongs to the caliciviridae family and is one of the common pathogens that cause acute gastroenteritis

Norovirus has the characteristics of low infection dose, long detoxification time, and strong resistance to the external environment, and is easy to cause gastroenteritis outbreaks in relatively closed environments such as schools and childcare institutions. Norovirus is an RNA virus that mutates very easily, with new variants emerging every few years, causing global or regional outbreaks.

What are the symptoms of norovirus gastroenteritis?

Norovirus infection has an incubation period of 12-72 hours and is usually 24-48 hours

Common symptoms are mainly nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea, some patients have headache, chills and muscle aches, children mainly vomit, adults have diarrhea, feces are loose stool or watery stool

How does norovirus spread?

Norovirus infection in cases and recessive infections is the source of norovirus infection, and the transmission routes are varied, mainly through ingestion of food or water contaminated with faeces or vomit, contact with the patient's feces or vomit, aerosols produced when vomiting is inhaled, and indirect contact with objects and environments contaminated with faeces or vomit

How is norovirus gastroenteritis treated?

Norovirus gastroenteritis is a self-limiting disease for which there are currently no effective antiviral drugs

Most patients have mild symptoms after onset, do not require treatment, and recover after 2 to 3 days of rest, and oral sugar saline or oral rehydration salts can be used to replace the water consumed by vomiting and diarrhea. For infants and the elderly, especially the elderly with underlying diseases, such as frequent vomiting or diarrhea, dehydration and other more serious symptoms, should be treated in time.

How can I prevent norovirus infection?

1. Practice hand hygiene. Before eating, after using the toilet, and before processing food, you should wash your hands correctly according to the 6-step handwashing method, and wash with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds, but it should be noted that alcohol-based disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizers are not effective against norovirus and cannot replace hand washing.

2. Pay attention to food and water hygiene. Do not drink raw water, vegetables and fruits should be thoroughly washed, cooking food should be cooked, especially oysters and other shellfish seafood should be cooked and eaten.

3. Cases should be isolated at home as much as possible to avoid infecting others. Patients with norovirus infection should be isolated as much as possible from the illness to 3 days after recovery, mild patients can be isolated at home or in the outbreak institution, and severe patients need to be sent to medical institutions for isolation treatment.

During this period, patients should wash their hands frequently, maintain hand hygiene, try not to have close contact with other healthy family members, separate meals and accommodation, especially do not cook or take care of the elderly and young children.

4. Do a good job of environmental cleaning and disinfection. Keep the indoor temperature suitable and open the windows regularly for ventilation. Environments and objects contaminated with the patient's vomit or feces need to be disinfected with chlorine-containing preparations.

When cleaning items contaminated with vomit, wear plastic gloves and masks to avoid direct contact with contaminants.

The patient's home environment should also be disinfected according to the guidance of medical staff to avoid transmission within the family.

5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Maintain a healthy lifestyle such as regular work and rest, reasonable diet, and moderate exercise to enhance the body's resistance to viruses.

The following conditions require prompt medical attention

1. Yellow bile-like fluid in the stool or vomit.

2. Infants under 1 year old cannot eat normally for more than 4 hours.

3. Severe abdominal pain that cannot be relieved.

4. Poor mental response and drowsiness.

5. Dry mouth, thirst, dry lips, no urine or diaper for 4-6 hours for the baby, no urine or no wet diapers for the child for 6-8 hours, no tears when crying, sunken eye sockets, poor skin elasticity.

6. High fever does not go away.

7. Diarrhea or vomiting that lasts for many days.
