Jellyfish visits may be weather-related

Recently, the weather in Zhuhai is hot, and the offshore wind is strong, which is easy to "blow" the jellyfish that breed in large numbers in the offshore waters.

In addition, near-jellyfish are easily crushed and stranded by waves, and the jellyfish will not die immediately, and the toxins on their tentacles will still exert toxicity for a period of time, causing harm to the human body.

Jellyfish toxins

Jellyfish are beautiful but fierce. Most jellyfish consist of 3 main parts: an umbrella-shaped or bell-shaped body, a tentacle, and a wrist. The tentacles are digestive organs and hunting weapons; The tentacles are covered with stinging cells, such as poison silk, capable of shooting venom, and the toxic component is called jellyfish toxin.

Jellyfish toxin is mainly composed of proteotoxins, peptides and enzymes, as well as bioactive mediators such as strong anesthetics, histamine, serotonin, etc., and has a variety of biological toxicities such as hemolysis, skin necrosis, cardiovascular, nerve, muscle, liver, kidney damage and so on. These toxic effects lead to the corresponding clinical symptoms in patients with stings.

Symptoms after being stung by a jellyfish

Wei Yuwen, director of the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine of Zhuhai Xiangzhou District People's Hospital, introduced:

1. Local symptoms after being stung by jellyfish: immediately burning, itching, tingling, local gradually appear linear erythema, papules, spots, mostly consistent with the contact direction of the tentacle, like whip marks, itching is obvious.

2. Patients with severe stings or allergies immediately appear erythema, urticaria, blisters, ecchymosis, and even epidermal necrosis, etc., and severe pain, itching and flushing of the whole body may occur. Local symptoms generally last 10-20 days, some up to several months, and severe cases may have pigmentation, scarring, gangrene.

3. Systemic symptoms: anaphylaxis-like reactions occur successively within minutes to hours after severe stinging, and symptoms such as edema, dyspnea, headache, dizziness, arrhythmia, joint pain, abdominal cramps with vomiting and diarrhea appear.

4. Anaphylactic shock occurs in severe cases, followed by sudden death.

Emergency relief measures

Don't panic if you accidentally get stung by a jellyfish, remember these emergency measures:

After being stung by a jellyfish, go ashore immediately and rinse the sting with seawater, remember not to rinse with fresh water, because the osmotic pressure of fresh water is low, which can cause the spiny sac to burst and release toxins; Rescuers should wear gloves to avoid stings themselves. Patients should go to the hospital as soon as possible.

How to prevent injury from jellyfish

Clear safety warnings should be set up in coastal swimming places; It is forbidden to swim and play in the water outside the bath, and it is even more difficult to enter at night; Jellyfish are creatures that tend to freshwater, and when it rains, they will automatically approach the sea, so avoid swimming in the sea after rain.

Before swimming and training in the sea, scientific popularization of harm prevention should be done to improve the knowledge and ability of self-protection.

When encountering jellyfish, it cannot be directly grasped or fished by hand; Even dead jellyfish, as long as its spiny sac is still wet, can stab people, and jellyfish fragments floating on the beach cannot be touched or picked up by hand.
