ESM: Solid state linear supercapacitors based on CNT yarns are used in wearable and implantable devices

The revolutionary progress of Internet of Things technology, as well as continuous technological development in sports, healthcare, environment and other fields, has made human life technology-driven and intelligent. Emerging concepts such as wearable electronic devices (WEDs), including e-textiles and implantable electronic devices, are becoming the backbone of IoT technology, creating a strong demand for the development of portable and miniaturized energy storage systems. To actually enable wearable and implantable electronics, these energy storage systems should be more flexible and can be woven into textiles or biocompatible and implantable. Practical linear supercapacitors based on carbon nanotube (CNTs) yarns have developed into wearable and implantable energy storage devices due to their excellent physical properties. This paper reviews the concept of solid-state linear supercapacitors (SSLSc), the development history of CNTs yarn, production methods and performance, and the design and development progress of linear supercapacitors based on CNTs yarn in wearable and implantable electronic devices. The strategies employed, such as the nuclear sheath structure of metal-CNTs and the double curling of CNT sheets, are reviewed to form robust hybrid SSLSc with very high loading volumes of pseudocapacitor materials that would otherwise be non-spinning, ultimately improving their electrochemical performance. The application of the concepts of self-healing, stretchable, twistable and biocompatible linear supercapacitors based on CNTs yarns in WED and implantable devices is also discussed.
