USC will open a School of Advanced Computing. The new college, which is part of the Viterbi School of Engineering, will focus on artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, blockchain and quantum information, and set up information technology, data science and interdisciplinary advanced computing science related majors, and is mainly open to students with zero CS background, and students of any major can enter the college to learn computer technology such as coding.
USC's CSRankings ranked 27th in the United States, which is very good. According to the American Science Foundation, USC received $110 million in federal investment in computer science research, ranking 4th. At the same time, USC's influence in Silicon Valley also ranked 4th.
What's even more exciting is that USC also plans to expand its presence in Silicon Beach. To achieve its small goal of becoming a major source of tech talent on the West Coast, USC has also established two research institutes in Silicon Beach, where technology companies are crowded, where students will have the opportunity to work for a semester through internships or projects.
The university announced that the faculty will expand starting next spring, and the new college is expected to open next fall.
Yale University
Computer science is currently the second most popular major at Yale. In the fall semester of 2022, total enrollment in computer science programs reached a record high of 3,260.
To this end, Yale University has added a joint major in Computing & Linguistics to meet the needs of students who are interested in using computational methods to study human language.
This major requires students to complete core courses in the four areas of mathematics, statistics, linguistics, and computing, and offers both Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees.
Whether it's a computer science student who lacks language training or a linguistics major with no programming experience, you can complete different fields of study in this program without having to specialize in two majors.
The Computing and Language major is just one of many joint majors at Yale University, along with Computer Science and Economics/Psychology/Arts.
Columbia University
Columbia University has also implemented major adjustments to the computer science major, involving all relevant majors in the three colleges of CC, GS and SEAS.
The school abolished the previous operation of allowing students to choose their own track, and replaced it with a unified completion of a fixed number of basic and elective courses. SEAS Academy students are required to complete 4 field foundation courses, 4 general technology electives, and 4 additional computer science courses. CC and GS Academy students are also required to complete 3 field foundation courses and 3 additional computer science courses.
At the same time, for other elective courses (GTE) requirements, SEAS Engineering is no longer limited to "mathematics, science, engineering or closely related subjects", but is extended to any elective courses in all departments, including astronomy, biological sciences, earth and environmental sciences, psychology, etc.
The university said the purpose of the change was to accommodate the growing academic field and alleviate the department's overenrollment problems over the years. The new changes will affect students applying for a major or minor in computer science starting in 24, while any student filing in 2023 can choose between the old and new requirements.
University of California, Berkeley
On May 18, the University of California's Board of Trustees voted to establish the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) at Berkeley, the first new college to be established at Berkeley in nearly 50 years.
Every year, UC Berkeley sends a large number of top talent to Silicon Valley, and its undergraduate programs in computer science (tied with MIT and Stanford University) and data science (ranked first) are ranked at the U.S. News topped the charts.
The CDSS College will be responsible for teaching undergraduate programs in data science, while developing new graduate programs in collaboration with other departments and institutions. Once academic and student support systems are in place, the current undergraduate data science and computer science majors in the College of Arts and Sciences will eventually be transferred to the new college. The new college is expected to open in 2025.
The last time UC Berkeley added a new school was in the 1960s, with the School of Journalism and the School of Public Policy established in 1968 and 1969, respectively. As artificial intelligence and other technologies continue to impact the world, CDSS Academy was born.
The concentration of computer majors in American colleges and universities indicates that the popularity of the major will continue to rise, and in contrast, the competition for applications will become more fierce. Students who want to apply for CS majors should be prepared and plan in advance.
