According to Bloomberg on May 31, a person familiar with the matter revealed that Huang Jenxun, founder and CEO of the US chip manufacturing giant NVIDIA, plans to visit Chinese mainland in June to meet with a number of technology executives in the world's largest chip market. Recently, Huang attended the Computex Global Media Roundtable held in Taipei.

The person familiar with the matter said that Huang was on a private trip. If successful, it would be Huang's first trip to Chinese mainland in many years.

The person also revealed that Huang plans to visit gaming giants Tencent and ByteDance, electric car makers Li Auto and BYD Auto, and tech companies such as Xiaomi. Huang's itinerary has not yet been finalized, and subsequent details may change.

According to reports, California-based NVIDIA was founded in 1993 and has grown into a chip manufacturing giant. In recent years, NVIDIA is becoming a key player in the current booming AI space, with its processors considered the chips of choice for training and hosting AI services. According to public information, about one-fifth of NVIDIA's revenue comes from China.

But Bloomberg mentioned that the role of NVIDIA, which is emerging in the field of artificial intelligence, in the Chinese market is complicated by geopolitics and Sino-US tensions. The Biden administration announced a ban last year banning the company from selling its most advanced AI chips to Chinese customers.

However, after the ban, NVIDIA quickly adjusted its product layout and developed "new chips that meet the restrictions" for the Chinese market.

Last week, Nvidia released an AI-powered earnings report that shattered Wall Street expectations.

Since then, NVIDIA's stock price has soared, and its intraday market value briefly exceeded $1 trillion on the 30th Eastern Time, creating history. At the same time, Huang's every move has also attracted special media attention.

At the Taipei International Computing Show's Global Media Roundtable on May 30, Huang warned against U.S. semiconductor export restrictions to China, saying not to underestimate the catch-up ability of Chinese companies, and a large number of local GPU startups are emerging. He also stressed that NVIDIA will abide by the export control regulations of the US government, but he believes that China will take the opportunity to cultivate local entrepreneurs to deal with tensions with the United States.

Previously, Huang Jenxun also mentioned US semiconductor export controls to China in an exclusive interview with the Financial Times. He believes that the chip battle provoked by the United States has constrained its domestic semiconductor companies or brought "great damage" to its technology industry, and described the ban as making NVIDIA "hands tied behind its back."

The news of Huang's planned visit to China comes as Tesla CEO Elon Musk is visiting China, following visits to China by international executives such as JPMorgan Chase and Apple. China remains a key market for many of the world's largest companies after the pandemic, according to Bloomberg, while many economists expect China's economy to accelerate in 2023.
