
On October 6, 2021 local time, Yang Jiechi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, and Sullivan, assistant to the US President for National Security Affairs, met in Zurich, Switzerland. The two sides had a comprehensive, frank and in-depth exchange of views on China-US relations and international and regional issues of common concern. The meeting was constructive and conducive to enhancing mutual understanding. The two sides agreed to take action to implement the spirit of the september 10 call between the two heads of state, strengthen strategic communication, properly manage differences, avoid conflict and confrontation, seek mutual benefit and win-win results, and work together to promote China-US relations back to the right track of healthy and stable development.
Yang Jiechi pointed out that whether China and the United States can handle their relations well has a bearing on the fundamental interests of the two countries and the two peoples and on the future and destiny of the world. Both countries and the world will benefit from Sino-US cooperation. If China and the United States confront each other, both countries and the world will suffer serious damage. The US side should deeply understand the mutually beneficial and win-win nature of bilateral relations and correctly understand China's domestic and foreign policies and strategic intentions. China opposes the use of "competition" to define Sino-US relations.
Yang Jiechi said that the Chinese side attaches importance to President Biden's recent positive remarks on Sino-US relations, notes that the US side has expressed no intention of curbing China's development and does not engage in a "new Cold War", and hopes that the US side will adopt a rational and pragmatic China policy, work with the Chinese side to respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and take the road of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation between China and the United States.
Yang Jiechi expounded China's solemn and just position on Issues related to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, Tibet, sea, and human rights, and demanded that the US side earnestly respect China's sovereignty, security, and development interests, and stop using the above issues to interfere in China's internal affairs.
The US side said it adheres to the one-China policy.
The two sides also exchanged views on climate change and regional issues of common concern.
