Every year from early November to March, hundreds of millions of American monarch butterflies travel from their summer habitat on the U.S.-Canada border to the Butterfly Valley in central Mexico, Michoacán

In order to protect the habitat of monarch butterflies, the Mexican government issued a decree in 1986 to designate the Altamirano Mountains and four other surrounding mountains as ecological reserves
