IT House News on May 21, according to "Nikkei Asia" reported that Kyocera announced earlier this month that it officially withdrew from the consumer-facing mobile phone business, and now announced an investment of 400 billion yen (currently about 20.32 billion yuan) to bet on the semiconductor business.

Kyocera stated in its medium-term management policy that it will invest a total of JPY 850 billion over the next three years. Of this, 400 billion yen will be invested in its semiconductor division, which also means that Kyocera will invest 2.3 times more in semiconductors than in the previous medium-term plan. Kyocera said that most of the funds will be used to increase production capacity of IC carrier boards and ceramic parts for semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and the other part will be used to develop and mass-produce advanced packaging technologies.

Kyocera will open a new production facility next spring on the campus adjacent to Sony Semiconductor's Nagasaki plant, which will be the first new plant to be built by Kyocera Semiconductor's division in nearly 20 years. Kyocera expects the plant to have an annual output value of 25 billion yen after mass production. IT House reported earlier this week that Kyocera's communications systems division, which specializes in smartphones, lost 11.7 billion yen last year and decided to withdraw from its consumer-grade mobile phone business. In addition, the rookie Bamuda mobile phone, a Japanese home appliance manufactured by Kyocera, also announced this month that it would stop production due to high costs.
