The Sea Mistake Map is a set of maps drawn by the painter Nie Huang during the Kangxi Dynasty of the Qing Dynasty. Nie Huang used vivid pictures and texts to record the various creatures he had seen and heard with his own eyes and ears along the coast of China. Limited by the times, the book is exaggerated, there are many unreliable points, and the records of biological habits are also mixed with true and false, but they are interesting and loved by the emperors of the Qing Dynasty. There are four volumes of "Sea Mistake Map", three of which are now in the Forbidden City in Beijing and one in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
The "wrong" of "sea mistake" does not mean a large number of errors, this "wrong" means a wide variety and a mixture of things, that is, a wide variety of creatures in the ocean. At least since the Western Han Dynasty, Chinese used "sea mistakes" to refer to marine life, so the "Sea Fault Map" is essentially an ancient marine life atlas. Nie Huang can be said to be a Qing Dynasty naturalist, because there are all kinds of things painted in the "Sea Mistake Map". During the Kangxi Dynasty, he traveled to Hebei, Tianjin, Zhejiang, and Fujian to investigate coastal organisms, lived along the coast for a long time, and has always been very interested in coastal organisms. Suffering from the fact that no atlas of marine life had been circulated since ancient times, he decided to draw a book of his own. Whenever I saw one, I drew it down, flipped through the group books for verification, and asked local fishermen to verify the authenticity of the ancient books.
After decades of accumulation, Nie Huang finally completed the "Sea Mistake Map" in the thirty-seventh year of the Kangxi Dynasty (1698). This is also the only work he has passed down, and the whole book does not contain words dedicated to the emperor, which shows that Nie Huang did not intend to pay tribute to the book. It was not until the fourth year of Yongzheng (1726) that the book reappeared: the imperial palace archives of this year record that the eunuch Su Peisheng brought the sea fault map into the palace. After that, Emperors such as Qianlong, Jiaqing, and Xuantong loved this atlas. In the Republic of China, due to the Japanese invasion of China, the cultural relics of the Forbidden City moved south, and in the middle of the transfer, a full set of four books was divided. Now the first three volumes of "Sea Mistake Map" are left in the Forbidden City in Beijing, and the fourth volume is hidden in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
