African "killer bees" killed six people

According to New Zealand's Stuff News Network on May 9, after a traffic accident in Nicaragua, six passengers, including a mother and daughter, were attacked by bees and died.

Earlier, a bus carrying about 60 passengers overturned off the road and ended up crashing into an area where African bees were nesting. The angry bees are said to have reacted by stung 45 passengers as they fled the vehicle.

Although the bus fell 49 meters after overturning, local reports said paramedics believed the victim's cause of death was linked to a bee sting.

Preliminary reports put the death toll at four. But two seriously injured victims later died in hospital. The crash occurred about 185 kilometers north of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua.

Among those killed were a 47-year-old local woman and her 8-year-old daughter. Another deceased was 84 years old.

The African bee, commonly known as the "killer bee", is a hybrid species of Western honey bee. They are generally more defensive, respond faster to external disturbances than other bees, and chase them longer distances.
