October 1, 2015 Scientists from a joint team of China and the United States discover that plastic is used as an insect-eating company. Researchers at Stanford University and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics observed in the lab that 100 mealworms can swallow 34 to 39 milligrams of polystyrene plastic per day, equivalent to the weight of a small tablet. The plastics stay in the intestines of mealworms for less than 24 hours, and about 48% of them are degraded into carbon dioxide and a small part is absorbed.
Mealworm has a bacterium (red fungus) in the digestive tract that naturally breaks down polystyrene (commonly known as styrofoam).
Mealworm, also known as rhubarb mealworm, brown pseudo-walking worm, bread worm, is a beetle. The larvae of mealworm are yellow with a body length of about 2.5 cm, while adults are black with a body length of 1.25 to 1.8 cm. Its larvae are common pet feed.
The larval stage known as bread worms is a very popular edible insect, high nutritional value, as long as it is a pet that can eat worms can be fed, pet stores usually throw small dead pets that are not well taken care of into the bread worm pile as bait, can feed bread worms and clean up the body with one stone; but adult worms have no economic value. The optimal temperature for indoor rearing is below 25-30 ° C.
