Just after the Spring Festival in 2016, fishermen in yangkougang economic development zone (Changsha town) in Rudong County, Nantong City, Jiangsu Province, when they went to the seaweed truss farm to work, they found a "big fish" that had never been seen before, and after careful observation, this "big fish" had run aground and died.
The fishermen then reported through the village committee to the Yangkou Port Economic Development Zone, the Changsha Border Police Station and the Changsha Fishery Administration Squadron. After the provincial and municipal marine experts rushed to the scene to investigate, it was confirmed that the "big fish" that ran aground and died was a sperm whale.
The sperm whale, named "Rustle", weighs more than 40 tons. In the afternoon, another sperm whale weighing about 32 tons was found in the nearby waters.
Cetacean stranding refers to the phenomenon of cetaceans swimming alone or in groups, swimming to shallow waters and stranded due to low tide, and cannot swim back into the water and die.
According to the introduction in the exhibition hall, there are many speculations about the cause of the cetacean stranding. For example, the echo positioning system on which cetaceans rely on is wrong, resulting in cetaceans being unable to identify directions; cetaceans losing their way due to changes in the Earth's magnetic field; failing to return to the deep sea before low tide due to bulimia migratory fish, going to shoals or shores to hunt; dying of illness, poisoning, human injury, etc.; The most surprising is the claim that cetacean suicide, which holds that cetaceans have certain cognitive abilities and intelligence, and that in some desperate cases, cetaceans may express itself in the form of voluntary stranding. hehe!
The cortical specimen of "Rustle" is 15.3 meters long, 4.2 meters wide, 4 meters high and weighs more than 1500 kilograms.
The skeletal specimen of "Rustle", 14.6 meters long and weighing nearly 1000 kilograms.
Sperm whales have huge heads and can make up a third of their bodies.
Sperm whales have twenty to twenty-six pairs of conical teeth, all of which grow on the slender lower jaw, which is only "pierced" by the teeth on the lower jaw.
Sperm whales are adept at diving and are the deepest and longest-dive mammals.
Although it cannot be seen from the outside, from its skeletal specimens, the fins of the sperm whale actually have human-shaped palm bones inside, which is so magical!
In addition, ambergris (gray amber), a stone-like secretion at the end of the large intestine of sperm whales, has also been found in the body of "rustling". It is said that because ambergris has its unique sweet fragrance, it has historically been mainly used as a perfume fixer.
