Shanghai, 23 Apr (Xinhua) -- Shanghai Customs announced on 23 April that it recently intercepted a live locust during the on-site quarantine of a batch of stainless steel plate and wooden packaging from West Asia, which was identified by the laboratory as a male adult desert locust. This is the first time that this pest has been intercepted at our port.
After follow-up monitoring, no desert locust outbreak was found at the Shanghai port. At present, Shanghai Customs strictly implements the requirements of the General Administration of Customs and strengthens the phytosanitary and port monitoring of goods and means of transport inbound.
According to reports, the Shanghai Air and Sea Port has recently strengthened the quarantine defense line, while strictly preventing the import of the new crown pneumonia epidemic from abroad, it has made every effort to quarantine the imported goods, successfully seized a number of harmful organisms such as desert locusts, pumpkin fruit flies, spruce eight-toothed beetles, etc., and effectively built the ecological security of the "national gate".
Recently, the customs of Pudong International Airport carried out routine inspections of international transit air containers, and found insect individuals at the inner edge of the box. After identification, it was confirmed as a phytosanitary pest pumpkin fruit fly. Pumpkin fruit fly, also known as South Asian fruit fly, has a wide range of hosts and strong reproductive ability, and is particularly harmful to the fruits and vegetables of the Cucurbitaceae family.
Waigaoqiao Port Area Customs recently intercepted more than 10 larvae of the pest spruce eight-toothed beetle in a batch of spruce logs imported from the Czech Republic. Spruce eight-toothed beetle mainly causes harm to coniferous tree species such as spruce, larch, and korean pine, and has a very strong reproductive ability, which can lead to the death of the entire forest, and is one of the most destructive clustered forest beetles.
Shanghai Customs said that for the above-mentioned seized pests, quarantine and pest removal treatment were implemented in a timely manner. At the airport and port, Shanghai Customs took the initiative to respond to the recent rapid growth of international freight and transit business, innovatively implemented the "electronic fence + quarantine inspection" work system, and adopted quarantine pre-quarantine and information pre-judgment to further improve the quality of quarantine at the port and strictly prevent "biological invasion".
In addition to visible pests, Pudong International Airport Customs and Shanghai Customs Animal, Plant and Food Inspection and Quarantine Technology Center recently confirmed two batches of corn seeds imported from Chile with corn dwarf mosaic virus.
Corn dwarf mosaic virus is one of the pathogens that cause corn dwarf mosaic disease, which seriously harms a variety of grasses, including crops such as corn, sorghum and sugarcane, and can cause plant fading, dwarfing, sterility and premature death.
The corn dwarf leaf virus intercepted at Pudong International Airport has not been reported in China, and the relevant 3.91 tons of imported corn seeds have been supervised and destroyed.
