It is now widely believed that the ancestors of gibbons were not upper neo-apes, but their earlier close relatives, small apes of eastern Africa such as slender apes, lake apes or tree apes. Slender tree ape fossils date back to the mid-Miocene and Early Miocene 15 million years ago to 20 million years ago. Compared with the new ape tree ape, the arm is shorter, the tail is longer, and the ability to cross the arms is comparable to that of the gibbon, but it is more like a gibbon in other aspects, such as dietary habits. It is almost certain that tree apes live in dense forests and feed on fruits, leaves and flowers, which is similar to that of living gibbons.
