▲ Yamanaka Chamber of Commerce, "The Grand View of Ancient Art in China", Osaka, 1924, Plate No. 149
The piece is from the old collection of The famous Japanese antique dealer Yamanaka Shujiro (1866-1936), which was recorded in the catalogue of the Yamanaka Chamber of Commerce in 1924 and later collected by a senior private collector, and has not appeared in the auction market for more than 20 years.
▲Five Dynasties / Northern Song Dynasty, a pair of wooden carved bodhisattva statues (partial)
Such a large, well-preserved and paired wood carved Buddha statue is very rare, coupled with the rare wood carving works from the five generations and the Northern Song Dynasty, the pair of excellent wood carvings in this auction not only survived to this day, but still appeared as a pair, which is even more valuable and is a rare artistic treasure. The two statues are exquisitely crafted and solemn, and they are the works of Chinese Buddhist statues. They not only perfectly interpret the style of the early Song Dynasty, but also confirm the influence of the statues of the Tang Dynasty in the eighth century on future generations, and also herald the birth and transmutation of new styles. It can be seen that these two works are not only a collection in the history of Chinese statues, but also in the history of statues in the world.
Both statues are dressed as ancient Indian princes, richly dressed, and appear in the form of bodhisattvas. Guanyin is the incarnation of Amitabha Buddha, symbolizing the small Buddha in front of his crown, while the long-necked water bottle (or bottle decorated with a cap) in front of the other bodhisattva crown symbolizes wisdom and also points out his identity as a bodhisattva. "Guanyin" comes from the Sanskrit word Avalokitesvara, which means "observing the sounds of the world", referring to Guanyin's voice to save suffering and respond to requests. "Great potential" means "supreme power", which represents the power of wisdom, and the great potential to the bodhisattva can awaken people's desire to get rid of samsara.

This 18th-century medicine buddha statue vividly illustrates the long and profound interaction between the Cyan family and Asian art over the past 150 years. Looking back on the past, Cyan's productions have somehow embellished a few mansions across the country, which may be passed down from generation to generation in the collector's family, and some have been donated or bequeathed to museums and publicly exhibited in major public art museums.
