It is the largest and most abundant animal herbarium in southwest China, and has the richest exhibition hall for animal specimens exhibited to the outside world.

Although the museum has only been open for 14 years, biological research and specimen collections began many years ago.

Yunnan is known as the "kingdom of animals and plants", has a wealth of wildlife resources, in early 1959, the Zoological Museum Herbarium and the Research Institute were established at the same time, dedicated to the study of wild animals in Yunnan, preserving a large number of animal specimens in Yunnan and southwest China.

In September 1998, the Institute officially exhibited the "Animal Kingdom" exhibition, which was very well received in the society and laid the foundation for the museum.

Through more than 50 years of scientific research accumulation, in 2000, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the People's Government of Yunnan Province cooperated to build the "Kunming Zoological Museum Exhibition Hall" project, which was officially opened to the public in November 2006.

It is one of the favorite learning places for Kunming people, an important base for national science education, and an important window for displaying Yunnan's biodiversity, and was certified as a "National Secondary Museum" by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage in 2009.

At present, the Kunming Zoological Museum has an exhibition hall of about 6,000 square meters, exhibiting more than 5,000 specimens of rare and endangered animals, and relying on the collection of nearly 900,000 specimens to regularly replace exhibits and carry out various theme exhibitions.

The elephant specimens in the Asian Elephant Exhibition area are of various shapes and vivid details, which are almost the same as the "physical elephants" at Yuantongshan Zoo, which is the largest living terrestrial mammal in existence.

And the isolation of dinosaur fossils in the middle of the Mamenxi dragon fossil, actually has several times the height of the elephant, it is one of the largest dinosaurs found in China, climbed to the 3rd floor of the museum to barely level with it, standing next to it, Lufeng dragon, giraffe are petite.

Here, you can see the 25cm long oversized bamboo worm, the extremely symmetrical owl ring butterfly, the "colorful black" dark green color golden turtle... After reading it, I can't help but sigh that the beauty of the natural form of insects surpasses all human design.

In addition to the whole skin exhibition of tigers and leopards, there is also the Okapi, known as "Deer Shu" in the Classic of Mountains and Seas, a mythical beast that now lives only in Africa.

There is also a small fur from one of the most primitive mammals, the "platypus", many people do not know that the platypus has also been hunted for fur needs, and was once endangered. If animals are not protected and treated well in the future, some animals can only appear in the skin.

The fourth floor currently houses the 2020 Piglet Specimen Exhibition, as well as the children's favorite animation theater, which needs to be booked in advance from Tuesday to Friday, and is regularly broadcast at 10:00 and 14:00 on weekends.
