Recently, the Public Security Bureau of Jinan City, Shandong Province, handled a case across provinces and seized a case in which a Xiamen pet lover purchased five short-tailed spiders from Jinan. The police placed the five captured short-tailed spiders at the Xiamen Central African Wild Animal Park (Fujian Provincial Wildlife Park Rescue Center).

The Herald reporter learned from the zoo staff that the genus short-tailed spider is also called the Mexican firefoot spider, and the protection level is second-level. It is a genus of spiders in the family Aphididae and is endemic to Mesoamerica, eating all smaller animals than them, including insects and rats. They also eat chameleon lizards, frogs and mino fish. It is understood that the online trading of such protected animals is illegal. According to the staff, the genus is poisonous and very unsuitable for keeping as a personal pet.
