【Name and Type】In Chinese, the cockroach (guǒluǒ) is also called 蠮螉 (yēwēng), Pulu, slender waist bee, can also be commonly called wasp, some people are also called earth bees. In English, it is called "potter wasps" (Chinese for "clay pot bee" or "potter's bee") or "mason wasps" (Chinese for "bee like a mason"). About 3,000 species of grasshoppers have been discovered and described worldwide.

【Taxonomic status】The grasshopper is not an insect, but a large class of insects, all of which are classified into the subfamily Eumeninae. The subfamily Podidae is a subfamily of the insect family Vespidae. The subfamily is divided into more than 200 genera, with about 3,000 species, making it the largest subfamily in the Wasp family. There are about 5,000 descriptive species in the entire Vespa family.

Morphological description: Most species of grasshoppers are black or tan, usually with distinct yellow, white, orange, or variegated stripes. However, some species are blue or green in color, dull or bright, or have metallic flashes, and these species are mostly found in the tropics. When the cockroach is resting, its wings are folded longitudinally on the back of the body. In general, people identify cockroaches based on the following special evidence:

(1) A protruding lateral wing basal piece on the posterior lateral side of the mid-thoracic shield;

(2) Cracking of the tarsal claw;

(3) The basal segment of the posterior foot has a longitudinal dorsal ridge or crease, and often develops into a leaf-like or dentate process;

(3) The forewing has 3 subfloid chambers.

The way in which grasshoppers nest and the shape of their nests vary from species to species. Some species of grasshoppers can make full use of ready-made caves, such as tunnels where moth insects moth trees, abandoned caves by other animals, empty bamboo, naturally formed or artificially made holes, etc., they can modify or modify these caves to a certain extent to build their own usable nests. Some species of grasshoppers nest on their own needs. In a crab nest, 1 or more separate brood cells can be built. The material used to nest can be mud mixed with soil particles from spitting out regurgitated water, or it can be wood pulp after chewing up plant tissue. The nesting skills of the grasshopper are somewhat similar to those of masons (masons) in human pottery or house construction, so they are figuratively called "potter wasps" or "mason wasps" in English. I don't know if in the history of human pottery, the shape of many pottery is inspired by the nest of the grasshopper, and there are many indigenous tribes whose hut shape is also very similar to the nest of the grasshopper. Of the known species, all of them are predatory, most of them live solitary, and only a few exhibit primitive sociality.

When the nursery chamber in the nest is built, the adult cockroaches fly outside to catch prey, and use their stinging needles to paralyze the prey and put it in the chamber to serve as food for their offspring larvae. The prey caught by the grasshoppers are the larvae of beetles, the larvae of butterfly moths and spiders. For example, a species of shield crab that catches and paralyzes a lepidoptera called poison hemlock moth. In general, females lay their eggs in a hollow nursery in the nest before placing their paralyzed prey into it. Some species of crabs are born in the opening of the chamber, hanging from the silk thread in the nest, and the larvae hatch and fall on the prey to begin feeding. The larvae begin pupating after a few weeks of growth. From hatching to adults feathering and mating and laying eggs, the grasshoppers have to complete a life cycle, which is as short as a few weeks and as long as more than 1 year. Adult cockroaches feed mainly on nectar.
