In 1979, at the age of 18, Yang Xinmin was admitted to the Department of Mathematics of Chongqing Normal University (now Chongqing Normal University). In 1983, he stayed on as an assistant lecturer with honors. In 1985, Yang Xinmin was admitted to Chongqing University as a graduate student, and his research direction was operations research. Since then, Yang Xinmin has plunged headlong into the study of operations research.

"Operations research is the discipline of abstracting complex problems into mathematical models and then using mathematical theories to find optimal solutions." In his academic career, he has been doing one thing, that is, to do a good job in operations research, so that this discipline can make greater contributions to the basic scientific research and economic and social development of Chongqing and even the whole country.

Yang Xinmin first conducted operations research in the 1980s, when he was still living in the school's faculty dormitory, which was so small that he could only put a bed and a table. In the summer heat, there is no air conditioning, he shuts himself in his room all day, buried his head in calculations, accompanied only by the sound of the electric fan turning and the "brushing" sound of the pen tip across the scratch paper, a process that is long and lonely.

In his view, doing academics and sports competitions, we must also have a "fierce" and "tenacity", not only to be "fierce" to ourselves, but also to "tough" to the projects we study. It is precisely with this "tenacity" that can withstand loneliness, Yang Xinmin has made original research results in many directions in the field of operations research, and these achievements have also won Yang Xinmin the second prize of the first National Natural Science Award of the municipal university.

For more than thirty years of dedication to learning, the awards won by Yang Xinmin can be listed in a long list. But what he is more concerned about is how mathematics, as a basic discipline, communicates and integrates with various new disciplines and new technologies to collide with new achievements.

In 2019, Yang Xinmin led the creation of the Chongqing Center for Applied Mathematics based on his and his team's recent achievements in applied mathematics research, and only one year later, the center was approved as one of the first 13 national applied mathematics centers in the country, which is also the first national scientific research platform obtained by Chongqing in basic disciplines.

"On the day of the Chinese New Year's Eve, medical teams from all over the country rushed to the aid of Wuhan, which was supposed to be a reunion day, they left their families and went to Wuhan to fight the epidemic, and many of them also went to the front line of the fight against the epidemic." While deeply moved, Yang Xinmin, as a scientific and technological worker, felt from the bottom of his heart that in addition to responding to the call for self-isolation and not adding chaos, he had to do something to contribute to the fight against the epidemic.

To this end, Yang Xinmin led the Chongqing Applied Mathematics Center to quickly set up a multidisciplinary comprehensive research and judgment team, since the beginning of February, they have worked together to study the change trend of the basic number of infections that reflect the potential and severity of infectious disease outbreaks, R₀, and make more accurate predictions on the development trend of the epidemic and the change of cumulative confirmed cases by establishing time series models, Logistic models, SIR infectious disease models and Bernstein function models. And the relevant research results will be reported to the Municipal Health Commission in a timely manner.

At the same time, on the basis of full demonstration, Yang Xinmin and his team twice submitted the "Forecast Report on the Development Trend of the New Crown Pneumonia Epidemic" to the municipal government in the form of suggestions from scientific and technological workers to provide support for relevant scientific decision-making. In the report, they not only made predictions on the development trend of the epidemic, but also put forward suggestions for chongqing's epidemic prevention and control, such as continuing to strengthen effective control, appropriately carrying out classified control, spreading positive energy through the media, and paying attention to the mental health of quarantined personnel.

During the epidemic prevention and control period, Yang Xinmin did not forget his duties as a teacher. Through the power of the "circle of friends", he organized and invited a number of well-known academicians in the field of mathematics to carry out online mathematical science popularization reports through online live broadcasting, bringing a feast of mathematical science popularization to hundreds of thousands of scientific researchers who stayed at home and teachers and students of large, medium, and small schools.
