>Virus probe political and biased

China opposes the politicization of COVID-19 traceability

China cannot accept the current version of the second phase investigation into the origins of the COVID-19 virus launched by the World Health Organization, as the plan has been compromised by political manipulation and disrespect of scientific facts, Zeng Yixin, deputy head of the National Health Commission, said at a news briefing on Thursday.

Zeng Yixin, deputy director of the National Health Commission, said at a press conference on July 22 that China could not accept the second phase of the WHO's new crown virus traceability plan because it was the product of political manipulation and did not respect scientific facts.

Zeng said the plan has listed the hypothesis that China had violated lab regulations and leaked the virus as one of the major research objectives, and he was "very shocked" after reading the proposal.

Mr. Zeng said he was "surprised" to see the WHO's phase II traceability program, which included the hypothesis that "China violated laboratory protocols and caused virus leakage" as one of the key points of his research.

Zeng said Chinese experts have voiced their suggestions for improving the investigation plan to WHO.

Zeng Yixin said that the Chinese expert group has proposed to the WHO to revise the second phase of the traceability plan.

"We hope WHO can carefully consider the advice by Chinese scientists, take investigating the origin of the COVID-19 virus as a scientific question free from political interference, and proactively and properly conduct sustained investigations into the origin of the virus in various countries across the world," he said.

"We hope that WHO can seriously consider the considerations and suggestions put forward by Chinese experts, truly regard the traceability of the new crown virus as a scientific issue, get rid of political interference, and actively and steadily promote the continuous traceability of the new crown virus in many countries and places around the world."

China's workforce has seen significant quality improvement as it has dwindled in size over the past two decades, an official said on Wednesday. Yu Xuejun, deputy head of the National Health Commission, said the country's "population dividend" is waning but the "talent dividend" is growing. This is the base for our high-quality development and one of the most important foundations of China's economic and social development, Yu said during a news conference in Beijing.

At a press conference in Beijing on July 21, Yu Xuejun, deputy director of the National Health Commission, said that China's labor force has been slowly decreasing over the past 20 years, but the quality of the labor force has improved significantly. Our demographic dividend is gradually weakening, but the talent dividend will become more and more obvious. This is the support for China's high-quality development and one of the most important foundations for China's economic and social development.

Citing figures from China's once-a-decade census, Yu said the number Chinese workers holding college degrees reached 218 million last year, compared with just 46 million in 2000 and 120 million in 2010.

Yu Xuejun cited data from China's census to say that China conducted national censuses in 2000, 2010 and 2020 respectively, and the population with university education level was 0.46 billion, 120 million and 218 million, respectively.
