Joseph Staten, the former director of the sci-fi shooter Halo, has left Microsoft.

A veteran of Bungie and 343 Industries' Halo project development, Staten left Microsoft's popular Microsoft platform shooter project in January 2023, but it was reported at the time that he would remain at Microsoft.

Now, however, Staten seems to be leaving his role as Microsoft's creative director entirely.

Staten posted a strategy statement on his Twitter account: "Hey guys, I'm really leaving Microsoft. I'll be sharing more information soon, but for now, I just want to thank all my Xbox colleagues for their understanding and support as I embark on a new adventure. ”

Staten did not disclose his reasons for leaving the company or elaborate on his next move.

Prior to Staten's departure from Microsoft, 343 Industries (including Tom French, Halo Infinite's creative director for multiplayer games) had a series of high-profile departures, while Microsoft's massive layoffs affected several Xbox studios, including 343's Halo Infinite publicity team.

Other recent departures include David Berger, who was lead developer of Halo: Infinite's ambitious Slipspace Engine technology, and 343 boss Bonnie Ross, who also announced her 15-year absence.

Microsoft also cut "at least 95 people" from Halo Infinity developer 343 Industries. Those now unemployed include "dozens of veterans, including top directors and contractors on which studios rely heavily." Temporary staff were also affected, with their contracts reportedly terminated and warnings issued "just a few days".

343 Industries then released a brief statement to quell concerns about Microsoft's flagship game IP, Halo, stating that Halo Master Chief will "stay here" and that the 343i team will "continue to develop Halo now and in the future."
