Night attack on Yangmingbao Airport
In early October 1937, it was a period of cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communists to resist Japan. The Japanese army broke through the Kuomintang defense line in northern Shanxi Province, and after occupying Dai County and Cheng County (present-day Yuanping), it continued to attack the south. The Nationalist army retreated to the area around Xinkou (present-day north of Xinzhou City) to prevent the Japanese from attacking Taiyuan.
In the middle of the year, the 769th Regiment of the 385th Brigade of the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army was ordered to carry out the task of flanking the rear of the Japanese army in the area east of Dai County and Chengxian County, and cooperated with the Kuomintang army in combat. The regiment advanced to the Sulongkou and Liujiazhuang areas on the south bank of the Tuotuo River and found that Japanese aircraft were constantly taking off from the Yangmingbao front airfield on the north bank of the Tuotuo River to bomb the Kuomintang positions in Xinkou. So they targeted the Japanese airfield.
After reconnaissance, they learned that there were 24 aircraft at the airport, which took turns to bomb during the day and were parked on the southeast side of the airport at night, and that there were more than 200 guard detachments and ground staff in the field, most of whom were stationed at the northern end of the airport, and that there were barbed wire fences around the airport and simple fortifications.
After understanding the situation, Chen Xilian, the commander of the 769th Regiment, decided to use the 3rd Battalion as a commando team, and the other battalions/companies were responsible for the response, and launched a battle on the night of the 19th, attacking Yangmingbao Airport at night.
With the help of local people, the 3rd Battalion smuggled across the Tuotuo River and entered Yangmingbao Airport covertly. When he reached about 30 meters away from the plane, he was spotted by Japanese sentries. The commando team immediately launched an attack, one annihilated the Japanese guard detachment, and the other quickly pounced on the aircraft group, and violently attacked the aircraft with machine guns and grenades, and immediately burst into flames.
After an hour of fierce fighting, the 769th Regiment annihilated more than 100 Japanese troops and damaged 24 aircraft at the cost of more than 30 casualties, supporting the Nationalist xinkou defense operation.

This was another major victory won by the Chinese army after the Pingxingguan Victory and the Yanmen Pass Ambush Battle to cut off the Japanese transportation line, weakening the Japanese air assault force and supporting the Kuomintang army's Xinkou Campaign.
However, when withdrawing from the battle, Zhao Chongde was unfortunately shot to cover his comrades-in-arms and died heroically. He was 23 years old.
