On October 15, Hunan Zhuzhou Internet celebrity "Luo Kitten Cat" drank the pesticide paraquat mixed with the drink during a live broadcast, did not wait for the lung source, and died after ineffective rescue.
Before that, on October 1, a sixth-grade female student in Henan Province was unhappy with her classmates and could not think of drinking paraquat for a while, according to news reports, the girl had died.
Paraquat, known as the "water of death", can be quite deadly once poisoned, giving you enough time to regret it, but not giving you any chance to live.
As a rapidly exterminating herbicide, paraquat can be quickly absorbed by plant green tissues, causing it to die, and when it enters the soil, it will be passivated and inactivated, without any poison to the soil. Because of its high efficiency, no environmental residues and low price, it quickly grew to become one of the most widely used herbicides in the world. However, the researchers who invented paraquat never imagined that the pesticide would be banned from sale because of the constant use of paraquat to commit suicide or die by mistake.
This suspended pesticide paraquat, which is drunk and discontinued, has a lethal amount of 5 to 15 milliliters (20-40 mg/kg) in adults, and even if it is dropped on the hand, it may be poisoned. Paraquat is absorbed through the digestive tract, skin and respiratory tract, and its toxicity affects multiple organs throughout the body and, in severe cases, can lead to multi-organ failure. These include heart failure, renal failure, liver failure, and respiratory failure. The lungs are the main target organs, with paraquat causing the greatest damage to the lungs, with irreversible fibrosis gradually emerging in the lungs.
The best thing about paraquat is that it doesn't kill you immediately, but eats your life little by little, as if you could hear the footsteps of death dragging you away, as someone once described, paraquat poisoning ends up being "buried alive" and unable to breathe. And this drug does not affect the nervous system, from the beginning to the end you are in a state of consciousness, slowly waiting for death to come. Changes in the lungs, the whole process is divided into 5 stages.
Stage 1: Patients develop chest tightness, cough, shortness of breath, crackles in both lungs, and pulmonary edema within 24 hours.
The second stage: in 1-3 days there will be progressively exacerbated dyspnea, accompanied by coughing up pink foamy sputum, pulmonary hemorrhage and exacerbation of pulmonary edema.
Stage 3: Acute respiratory distress syndrome develops within 3 to 5 days.
Stage IV: Intrastitial progressively exacerbated fibrosis of the lungs occurs within 1-2 weeks.
Stage 5: Respiratory failure and death within 2 weeks to 1 month.
On average, 10,000 people die of paraquat each year, and those who drink paraquat are extremely difficult to rescue, and basically fail to rescue them. Because of this, more than 20 countries have banned or restricted their use, and China stopped and cancelled the registration and production of paraquat water agents on July 1, 2014, and after a two-year buffer period, banned paraquat water agents from circulating in the market on July 1, 2016. The sale of paraquat (including colloids) on 21 September 2020 on the domestic market is prohibited.
