On April 24, Streamer · The 2021 Hong Kong Film Theme Photography Exhibition opened in Guangzhou. The exhibition opened in K11, the most fashionable shopping mall in Guangzhou, without tickets, and it was a weekend, attracting a large number of curious passers-by and crowding the exhibition site.
What attracts people is a set of black and white photos: Lin Qingxia who is wiping off the eyeliner, Xu Ke with her hands on her cheeks, Wang Zuxian standing in the pool halfway... An audience member vividly shared his viewing experience: "Seeing a photo, this man sat down handsomely, fixed his eyes on it, it turned out to be Andy Lau!" ”
Zhang Aijia Director, producer, actor, singer Photographed in the 1980s
The photographs were taken in the late 1970s and early 1980s, capturing the innocent years of these Uranus superstars. Wang Zuxian is 18 years old, Hui Yinghong is 21 years old, Andy Lau is 22 years old, Zhong Chuhong is 23 years old... They have just emerged in the industry, and they do not know that they will win awards in the future.
At that time, Liang Chaowei had not yet gone to the TVB training class, Xu Anhua had not yet made "Run to the Fury Sea", Xu Ke had just switched from the television circle to the movie, and Wu Yusen was still shooting Chaplin-style comedy.

Hong Kong movies are also on the eve of soaring. At that time, there was no Hong Kong Film Festival Academy Awards, Debao Film Company had not yet been born, new art city had just been established, the leading boss was still Shao's, and the rising star stole Bruce Lee and The Jiahe of the Hui Guanwen and Hui Guanjie brothers from Shaw.
Hong Kong films will have to wait ten years before they can become the "Hollywood of the East", the first in Asia in terms of output value, the second in the world, and the "double Monday" (Chow Yun-fat, Chow Sing-chi, Jackie Chan) to become a sales guarantee.

The photographer behind these photos is named Lu Yuying, who was born in Hong Kong in 1949, began to contact photography at the age of 23, taught herself, and became a well-known photographer in the Hong Kong cultural circle and film industry at that time, and also a witness to the rise of Hong Kong cinema. The first Hong Kong Film Awards were held in 1982, and Lo was one of the initiators and founders.
Recalling that year, Lu Yuying described everyone as in a state of "fighting", working to make movies, thinking about movies in their minds, and chatting about movies as soon as they sat down. "Everyone thinks that we must seize that opportunity, and it will be too late to do it now."

"It was a golden age for Hong Kong filmmakers." She lamented, "The film industry, the cultural world, the media industry, and the television industry are all mixed together, and not all good friends must become good friends." ”
In Tsim Sha Tsui, her friend opened a bar with something to eat, full of photos of celebrities, press conferences, movie openings and many other events held there, night and night, "You can meet everyone there, make a lot of noise." ”
Lu Yuying and Xu Ke
When the new film was released, she and her friends used to go to the midnight show of the premiere, "Before going, I must make an appointment to eat, and I will be there." ”
The midnight show is a very lively thing, "a feature of our Hong Kong film ecology". Usually scheduled on Friday or Sunday at 11:30 p.m., "the big cinemas all have to arrange midnight shows, young people have to go to midnight movies, everyone grabs tickets to see, and the venues are full." The entrance to the cinema is full of vendors, and the whole city of Hong Kong is brightly lit, just like the city that never sleeps. After the movie, you have to take a taxi, and you can't get a taxi for hours. ”
After watching the premiere, Lu Yuying's director and actor friends all got together to talk about their feelings, talk about the audience's reaction, where they liked it, where they didn't like it, and immediately went back to the editing room to modify it.
Lu Yuying and Lin Qingxia
Lu Yuying and Jackie Chan
She herself participated in running a magazine "Film Biweekly", with interviews, translations, film reviews, and academic research, "In fact, we run a magazine, but also to learn one or two foreign film magazines, the purpose is to promote Hong Kong film culture and knowledge." ”
She described it as a "fan magazine" who contributed articles to the activists of the cultural circles at that time, intellectuals, and literary and artistic youth, with no fees to collect, aiming to realize their ideals. Everyone pondered, since it is a magazine, it needs to be rich in pictures and text, the content of the text is there, and there are still pictures. It just so happened that Lu Yuying had a camera, so she gave her the task of taking pictures.
So there is this batch of precious photographs that we see today.
Because of the economic conditions at that time, the Film Biweek could only be printed in black and white. In order to cooperate with the printing and publishing, Lu Yuying concentrated on black and white shooting. As soon as the photographs were taken, they were so popular that newspapers and magazines at home and abroad competed to publish them.
Taking these photos is a side hustle for Lu Yuying, with no income and all relying on spare time to complete. In 1983, she stopped filming "filmmakers" for personal reasons, missing a lot of rising stars: Mei Yanfang won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1984 with "Fate", Liang Chaowei starred in "Underground Love" in 1986 and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor, zhang Guorong quit the music scene in the late 80s to enter the development of the film industry...
Zheng Shaoqiu Actor 1979
Hu Jinquan Directed by 1980
She confessed in the interview that she had thought that there would be many young people who would take over the theme of "filmmakers" and that "if I occupy this position, these young people will never have a chance." "But unexpectedly, there will be no one like her who specializes in film workers."
For Lu Yuying, after thirty years, the sudden popularity of the "Filmmakers" series is purely accidental. However, she is also very happy to see that people now like these photos: "Our gang of people, these things, still have their value, and now that I think about it, I don't regret paying so much." ”
Here's what she said:
Lu Yuying
To take a photo, one wait is one night
I started taking these pictures for The Hong Kong Film Biweek in 1979 and did it until 1983. In 5 years, he has filmed nearly 200 Hong Kong filmmakers. Many of the film directors and actors I made, although they are now big sisters and big brothers, were actually new people who had just debuted at that time.
I took most of the photos on set, hiding in dark corners waiting for the opportunity, often waiting a long time to take a photo, waiting all night, waiting until dawn.
Lin Qingxia, the big beauty, was already very famous at that time, I was unlucky to shoot her that night, basically waited for a night, the sky was almost dawn, I was ready to get nothing. She was going to remove her makeup, and it was strange that it wasn't as luxurious as it is now, so luxurious, she didn't even have an assistant, and she didn't have that kind of luxurious and beautiful private makeup cart, so she walked into a dirty van and began to remove makeup.
You know the van door is very narrow and it's hard to squeeze in, fortunately I'm relatively small, I went inside in a flash, immediately pressed the shutter, and she didn't react to it before I could shoot it.
Wang Zuxian Actor 1985
Once I just happened to meet Wang Zuxian on the set, it was really beautiful, she just happened to be filming "The Working Emperor", very casually, next to a swimming pool, waiting to play, I took a picture. The boys loved the picture and were amazed.
Xu Guanjie Actor 1985
At that time, Xu Guanjie was also filming "Working Emperor". He really didn't mind what the effect of the photo was, so it was difficult to shoot him, and I didn't want to shoot his acting expression, so I had to wait.
He is a very serious person, in order to look good when he is on the camera, as long as he stops, he starts to work out and keeps doing exercise. So I waited until he captured his kind of dedication to his work without being pretentious and unaware. You rarely see a picture of Xu Guanjie not smiling, he will show his bright smile when he looks at the camera, but this one is not smiling.
Hui Yinghong Actor 1981
At that time, Shaw's set was the largest in Hong Kong, and I often went inside to wait for opportunities. Once, as soon as I turned my head, I saw a little girl, Hui Yinghong. Of course, she is called "Red Sister" now, but in 1981 she was only 21 years old, and we all called her "Little Red".
I knew the Shaw set very well, it was a man's world. When I saw her, I felt "Oops" in my heart and sympathized with her. Surrounded by men, just a girl, you can imagine the stress and dilemma at that time.
In fact, at that time, she had already been nominated for the best actress (the first Hong Kong Film Awards), and her acting skills attracted a lot of attention. So at that time, everyone saw her look in the photo, which was very strange. I don't know why, I unconsciously used a pitch angle to shoot her, her confused eyes, is waiting to make a movie.
Andy Lau Actor 1983
Andy Lau. In 1983, he was really young, only 22 years old, and after filming "Run to the Fury Sea", everyone looked at him differently. Suddenly receiving so much attention, he was a little confused about his acting future for a while.
I was on top of a building in Central, and I saw him sitting on the windowsill, leaning over the tall buildings below. A young man, facing the bustling city of Hong Kong and his future prospects, a confused look came out. I deliberately photographed him very small, like a middle school student, fledgling and overwhelmed. It was also natural to think of what happened to him at that time.
Jackie Chan Director, actor 1981
The most special, I think, should be Jackie Chan's that. Jackie Chan is such a serious and calm person, rarely give people such a look. And I photographed him beautifully, like a sculpture.
At that time, I forgot what kind of movie he made, I only remember that day he was going to be a director and an actor again, but unfortunately the filming that night was not smooth, and it was very late, and Jackie Chan lost his temper. I've rarely seen him so angry, and suddenly he turned around and walked out on his own.
I immediately followed him. He went to the corner of the set, it was so dark, he sat there by himself and lost his temper, thinking about how to solve the problem. His arms, his face, the triangular composition were all there, the light was just right, and I pressed the shutter immediately. Then I finished work, and I just took this one picture that night.
Tian Ni Actress 1980s 80s well-known star, starred in Snow Lady and Golden Bottle Double Yan
The stars in my lens are not like "big stars"
At that time, the cultural circle and the film circle knew that I was a person, "Miss Lu who came to take pictures." I went to the TV station, the radio station, they all recognized me, knew that this person came to take pictures again, naturally turned on the green light, gave convenience, and let me in and out.
As for going to the set, it's easier, just say hello to the producer. Everyone is very cooperative, and will immediately tell you the time, location, shooting arrangements, and even if some are in a very remote place, they will send a car to pick you up.
None of my photos are posed, because as soon as I pose, their star fan comes out. I don't want that big star look, I want them to be in their most natural state.
Dillon Actor 1980
This picture of Dillon, which I asked him to hold, was a black-and-white poster hanging on the wall, half as tall and heavy as a half-man. I told him to take it off and carry it around the house. Keep moving, he won't have to pose.
At that time, many people in the film industry held meetings, chatted, and met people, all at the Regent Hotel, where Zhong Chuhong's photo was taken.
We were all chatting that night, very relax, and the red girl was sitting across from me. She had already made 4 films at that time, and the development was very smooth, but in front of all the people in the film industry, she knew that she had a lot to learn, like a well-behaved student listening attentively.
Li Hanxiang Directed by 1981
Li Hanxiang's picture is rarely noticed, but I like it myself. When I filmed him, he was already a very successful director, and he was very commanding.
In this photo, he stands next to a bunch of pros (extras) with a stage feel in the middle, like a pose. In fact, he was directing the shooting, ready to call: Camera (boot)!
Fan Yang Director and cinematographer 1984
Director Yang Fan took it while chatting at his house. I don't know if you have noticed that the painting behind him is Zhang Daqian's painting, and the posture in which he sits is unconsciously the same as that of the lady in the painting. When I found out about this, I immediately leaned down and photographed it.
Producer, Director, Actor 1982 Best Actor at the 2nd Hong Kong Film Awards, starring in "Best Partner", directing "Brothers and Sisters"
A lot of people's temperament is very special. For example, Mai Jia, you see his appearance and think he is very humorous, in fact, he is not humorous at all. You say he's fierce, and he's not fierce. The contrast can be great.
Tang Shuxuan directed in 1978
Tang Shuxuan, we joke that she is The Garbo of Hong Kong because she has that special nobility. She spoke softly, a beautiful and gentle person, and the picture was much worse than her own.
Hong Jinbao Producer, Director, Actor 1982
Hong Jinbao, he actually has a very strong aura, but in the photo I took, he has no aura and converges. He has been a big brother since he was a child, and he is also very tired, can he not be a big brother for a minute? The moment I took the picture, he couldn't be a big brother, he didn't need to carry these things, his shoulders were relaxed, so it was right.
Zeng Zhiwei Producer, Director, Actor 1982
(Zeng) Zhiwei is also, don't look at him now, he is now a big brother, in fact, he is very cute, just like a child. So I deliberately made him look very naïve and shy, not a very powerful filmmaker.
Guan Dexing was always a very tough guy, rarely appearing relaxed, and I couldn't imagine what he was like when he went into the bathroom. Finally, when he sat down to rest, he completely went into his own realm, "I am not your Guan Dexing, I am what I am."
Guan Dexing actor 1980
He sat on the couch with calligraphy hanging next to him, and he was wearing a Tang costume, and these elements enriched this picture, and the weight of our cultural traditions was all gathered in this picture, and it was amazing.
Before taking pictures, I don't chat with the people being photographed. For some people, chat guidance may be a trick, but I try not to use it. I think, in fact, you talk to me, you have been bribed by me. I still want to try to keep you as authentic as you are.
Noon Horse Director, actor 1982
The camera gets closer, closer
I didn't actually study photography specifically. In the early 1970s, Hong Kong's economy was not so developed, life was not rich, and there were no courses or schools dedicated to teaching photography. In this case, I could only grope on my own, holding a Wanda SLR camera and playing a little black and white printing.
Another well-known photography feature of Lu Yuying, "Beautiful Chinese", is a black-and-white street portrait taken in the mainland
My style is street, not salon. Salon-oriented photography prefers to shoot indoors, paying attention to lighting and so on. But I like the lens is very close, black and white, the grain is very thick, I don't like the soft one, and I prefer the effect of strong contrast.
I take pictures like guerrillas, fast and accurate. I used a 28mm lens, and I had to shoot very close, rush to them, press the camera, and press it to leave.
Xiao Fangfang Actor 1980
Xiao Fangfang's that, she was very sensitive to the camera that day, because her skin was a bit problematic at that time. When I got to the scene, she was wearing makeup, which was the most stressful and difficult moment for her.
She was such a smart person, of course, knew I was taking pictures. Fortunately, I am a small person, and my clothes are not prominent, and my sense of existence is very low. By the right time, she had forgotten that cosmetics were bad for the skin, and the most focused and professional spirit, I captured.
She is actually a very beautiful person, usually when we have to take pictures after eating, she has to make up lipstick immediately before taking pictures. So it's also dangerous for me to take this picture, and if I don't take it well and log it out, she might be angry and scold me not necessarily.
Liang Xingbo Actor 1978
Zheng Wenya Actor 1983 1979 "Miss Hong Kong", starred in the movie "Little Fear" and "Family Fun"
I've been lucky enough to have never met anyone who asked me about my photos. Only the time Lu Yan was photographed was very dangerous, and Lu Yan's sister gave me a look of face.
When I photographed her, she was already a big international star. You know, when a female star gets older, you get so close to her, she's disgusted, and so on. So she was a little impatient and didn't want to be photographed by me.
Lu Yan Actor 1978
The time I photographed her was in the dressing room, I was ready to give up, but when I had a chance, while she was concentrating on makeup, I suddenly jumped under the makeup table, raised my camera and rushed up to take a picture.
What women hate the most is to shoot her from below, but because her aura is very strong, she completely shoots the appearance of a Uranus superstar, and I think that picture is beautiful. I shot it and left, and I couldn't hear her scolding me.
In addition, it is very funny that Lin Zixiang's one is also a rare opportunity. I remember being on the set, he was filming I Love night.
Lin Zixiang Actor and singer 1981
In fact, I didn't go to shoot him that night, but when I saw him naked, I wore underwear and waited next to Linji (the extras) to enter the film. Wow, it was a rare opportunity to see him so relaxed, unguarded, and in that instant I photographed it.
I didn't even think about the consequences of this. Because Lin Zixiang was a singer at the time, his record company protected his image. But I was very willful at that time, doing what I wanted to do, and I wouldn't care about the consequences. Fortunately, there were no accidents after the publication, which is also lucky.
Ni Kuang Novelist and screenwriter 1981
We started the Hong Kong Film Awards
The photographs were originally taken for Film Biweek. In 1979, a group of young people who liked movies, in order to promote Hong Kong's film culture, paid for this magazine at their own expense.
At that time, Hong Kong cinema was on the eve of full glory. Everyone felt that they must seize the opportunity, work together, help each other, did not have time to think about other things, as soon as they sat down, they were talking about movies, box office, and production.
Wen Jun Film critic, screenwriter, director 1982
Huang Baiming Screenwriter, actor, producer 1982
In 1982, because we wanted others to affirm the level of Hong Kong films, we studied foreign Oscars and boldly held a "Hong Kong Film Awards", which is now the "Academy Awards". Our magazine has recruited all the Hong Kong film critics to help us write film reviews, and this group of them is the most qualified to select films, and the impetus and influence are also quite large.
We ran a column in the magazine, "Exposing People," and each issue introduced a filmmaker and showed their professionalism. The name of the column "Exposed People" is also very appropriate to my photography style.
Yuan Biao Actor, martial arts instructor 1985
The atmosphere at that time was very funny. We are a bi-weekly magazine, every two weeks out of an issue, before each issue comes out, everyone is very nervous, do not know who this issue is to "expose", and finally became a fun talk in the circle.
Who to shoot in each issue also depends on the time and place. On the one hand, I can't see if my time can be bumped, because I still have a full job, and running a magazine is just free to help. Sometimes like he has a new movie to go on, I try to cooperate with it, and it is not decided in advance.
Xu Anhua was the first person we filmed in this column. At that time, she had just completed a work called "Crazy Robbery", and suddenly became a high-profile new director. We learned that Hui Anhua was very afraid of being photographed, very shy, and I thought about it for a long time and finally thought of a suitable place, which is the upper floor of the Hong Kong Tram.
I asked her to go to Sheung Wan in the wee hours of the morning and got on the upper floor of a tram. I let her sit there alone, you ignored me, I ignored you, waited until her mental state was my favorite, and I took this picture of what you saw.
Zhang Shuping Art Direction 1981
Chen Xunqi Producer, Director, Soundtrack, Actor 1982
Liu Jialiang Director, martial arts instructor, actor 1979
I'm a very fair person, since I want to make a filmmaker, I want to introduce every position to people, editing, soundtrack, art direction, props, lighting... I've made it to let everyone know that movies aren't just stars. On the page of "Exposed People", we will also print his name, his position, and what works he has.
At that time, people did not know the workers behind the scenes when they watched movies, and they did not know that good movies had to listen to music or rely on editing. We guide everyone to understand.
Xia Wenxi Actor 1983
Yao Wei Actor 1981
We ran this magazine for three yuan a year, but the sales were dismal, and there were not many people in Hong Kong who liked movies and were willing to spend money at that time. Our working environment was harsh, the office was originally in an old house in Wan Chai, dirty, and then moved to Causeway Bay. By 1983, I didn't have time to take pictures myself.
Xu Ke and Shi Nansheng like "Exposure People" very much, and like to put "Exposure People" together when they are idle. Once Shi Nansheng proposed to assemble it into a book, it became the first book published by the "Film Studio": "Filmmakers". The first edition was printed in only 1,000 copies and sold out quickly.
Teddy Robin Producer, Director, Actor, Musician 1983
I don't really mind this kind of thing myself, but after "Filmmaker", I was very emotional. These photos turned out to mean so much to those in the industry that they were happy to have a book like this, or to have their own photos to keep.
It's a pity that Hong Kong has produced so many excellent filmmakers later, I didn't have the opportunity to take pictures of them.
In fact, I haven't seen these pictures for a long time, I'm a person who likes to look forward, and the past things are counted. Having this opportunity (referring to the 2021 Hong Kong Film Theme Photography Exhibition) gave me the opportunity to review these photos, and I was very happy to see them. It was as if my old age was suddenly no longer desolate, suddenly enriched.
Zhang Guoming directed by 1979
Yu Rentai directed in 1980
You ask me if this magazine was a success? See from what angle it comes from. Standing in the history of Hong Kong's film culture, the Academy Awards are all made by the people in it, so you say that it is not important.
As a person who has worked for the development of Hong Kong films, I think our gang should not regret it, and we have no regrets about what we have done, the photos we have taken, and the manuscripts we have written. This is our passion for movies.
