Mr. Xu joined Shanghai University in 2008 after graduating with a Ph.D. in Applied Psychology from East China Normal University. Pride came to an abrupt end in 2017, when Professor Peng Zhangyou, then director of the Academic Affairs Office, commented after listening to Mr. Xu's class: "You just conveyed knowledge in a way that students like to hear, and this is not the highest goal pursued by modern classrooms." "So, what should a modern classroom look like?" In addition to knowledge transfer, what is the more important goal?
With these questions in mind, Mr. Xu Ke began the road of teaching reform. As her research progressed, she found that in the age of the big bang of information, knowledge can quickly become obsolete. If students only memorize a few concepts and understand a few theories in class, then it will not be long before this knowledge enters the "trash can of the times". When faced with real-world problems, students are still helpless. "The three goals of value leadership, ability training, and knowledge transfer should be the direction of contemporary classroom efforts, and among them, ability training is the key." Teacher Xu concluded.
"Research-based And Challenging Teaching Model"

Since 2017, Mr. Xu Ke has carried out the reform of "research-oriented challenging teaching mode" in his classroom. The characteristics of this teaching mode are simply "three links + two integration + two penetrations": students should learn basic knowledge and basic theories on the online learning platform before class, conduct in-depth discussions with teachers and students on some key difficult problems and challenging problems in the classroom, and finally complete challenging projects after class to improve the ability to comprehensively use knowledge to solve problems. In this process, research-oriented teaching runs through the whole process, content with difficulty, depth and challenge runs through the whole process, information technology and curriculum are deeply integrated, and high-level scientific research achievements are deeply integrated with the curriculum. Finally, the cultivation of students' advanced thinking and problem-solving skills will be realized.
Self-study before class is the foundation of research-based and challenging teaching. In order to change the current situation of students passively accepting knowledge in traditional teaching, an effective way is to let students use their original knowledge experience to construct new knowledge. In 2019, Mr. Xu Ke's MOOC of the same name recorded with the support of the school was launched on the "China University MOOC" and "Super Star Erya" platforms. The course consists of 46 videos of 613 minutes, 220 quiz questions, 20 literature, 8 mind maps, and one challenging question per chapter. Students watch videos online before class, do exercises, and write self-study reports. Students reported that in the past, it was enough to take classes with only ears, but now they come to class with the results of their own thinking. "I am no longer 'nothing', nor am I 'unconditionally accepting' the teacher's point of view, and the collision of thoughts and the confrontation of words have become the main theme of the class." Classroom discussion is a "brain-burning" session. Most of the topics are derived from the teachers' scientific research projects, which are cutting-edge and have considerable difficulty and challenge. "There are basically no standard answers to these questions, and I was very uncomfortable at first." "But then it turned out that it wasn't about finding the final answer, it was about this thought process that kept getting closer to the truth," says Lei Rui, a student in the School of Management. In this regard, Teacher Xu frankly said that classroom seminar teachers must put themselves in the right position." The student is the protagonist of the classroom, and the teacher is only the 'midwife'. It is the teacher's duty to help, rather than replace, the student's "enlightenment". ”
After class, students also complete a challenging project in a semester as a group. They have to go through the whole process of scientific research, consulting materials, reading literature, designing experiments, collecting data, building models, analyzing data... In these processes, students' team spirit, critical thinking, and hands-on problem-solving skills can be comprehensively improved.
"Very strenuous but worth it"
In the five years since research-based and challenging teaching began, the classroom has changed significantly. The most intuitive performance is that the classroom experience of the students is better. In the fall semester of 2020, 87% of the students in the class reported that they often had "flow" experiences in class, feeling that time was rushing by like water. This is the result of a high degree of concentration of attention and a high degree of intellectual engagement.
Students' investment in learning has increased significantly. Ji Ying, a third-year student in the School of Management, said: "At first, I heard that I was going to use this method to take the class, and my heart was still muttering, but after about two weeks, I tasted it." The average amount of time I spend in this class before and after class this semester is six or seven hours a week, which is quite tiring, but I think it's worth it. Ji Ying is ready to apply for graduate school abroad in the future: "As far as I know, the top universities abroad all take classes in this way. In addition, students also radiate the ability cultivated in the classroom to scientific research and subject competitions, and more and more students in the School of Management join the teacher's subject team to carry out research during the undergraduate period and publish papers in various important journals.
Mr. Xu Ke's online courses have also been recognized by peers. In just one year of launch, more than 96,000 people across the country have chosen courses, and 126 colleges and universities, including Lanzhou University and South China Agricultural University, have chosen them as credit courses.
