Because Australia itself is a non-nuclear country, and the United States wants to sell Australian nuclear submarines, this seriously violates the Principles of Nuclear Non-Proliferation and undermines regional peace and stability. In response to this situation, the Chinese side did not get used to it this time, and issued a joint statement with Russia.
Recently, China and Russia officially issued a joint statement after the summit. In the statement, China and Russia strongly urge AUKUS to strictly fulfill its obligations to non-proliferation weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery, and maintain regional peace, stability and development. Although the content is not long, it is also a rare signal against other countries in this Sino-Russian joint statement.
In my opinion, the focus of the joint statement between China and Russia on AUKUS is on nuclear non-proliferation, because it is actually related to the geopolitical security of China and Russia. For Russia, the current Russian-Ukrainian conflict is raging, NATO military forces are concentrated in large numbers in Eastern Europe, which has essentially posed a threat to Russia, and the air contest between the two sides in the Black Sea and Baltic Sea has also begun. Against this background, if the United States follows the methods of the AUKUS alliance and supplies nuclear submarines or even nuclear weapons to Eastern European countries, then this will further threaten the security of the Russian homeland.
As far as China is concerned, the current Sino-US game situation is becoming more and more serious, and the United States' involvement in the South China Sea issue and the Taiwan Strait issue has obvious malice. Moreover, from the perspective of the diplomatic situation, the United States and Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines are becoming more and more closely connected, and it is not ruled out to increase the power of military deployment to these regions in the future. If the AUKUS alliance goes smoothly, it is entirely possible that the United States will also provide nuclear submarines and other weapons of mass destruction to Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, which China very unwants. Therefore, for China and Russia, the evil nature of the AUKUS alliance is clear, and we must prevent micro-developments, and at the same time unite more countries to participate in the condemnation of such nuclear proliferation.
And in addition to active defense, in my opinion, some necessary counterattacks can also be missing. Specifically, since the United States openly sells nuclear submarines to Australia, China and Russia can also appropriately strengthen cooperation on nuclear forces, such as purchasing Russian nuclear fuel or some advanced nuclear technology. If the United States continues to make the NPT a scrap of paper by indiscriminately funneling nuclear-related weapons to other pro-American countries, China and Russia will need to fight back equally.
